🌿 WHEN GARDENS BECOME PLACES OF REMEMBRANCE

Gardens are often places of beauty and tranquillity but sometimes their landscape can provide the setting for something far more poignant.

At Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, Standing with Giants has returned with D-Day 1476 – For Your Tomorrow.

From 21 October to 29 November, 1,476 life-sized silhouettes will stand within the grounds, each representing someone who lost their life under British command on D-Day.

Set against Waddesdon’s historic landscape, the installation transforms familiar lawns and garden spaces into a powerful place for reflection and remembrance.

The Manor is also looking back at its own wartime story through 1939–1945: A House Interrupted, recalling the years when Waddesdon became home to 100 evacuee children from Croydon.

For those who care for historic gardens and estates, it is a reminder that these landscapes are about much more than their planting.

They are places where horticulture, heritage and human stories come together and where the careful stewardship of a landscape allows its history to continue being shared with future generations.

🌸 WHAT MAKES A NEW PLANT VARIETY STAND OUT?

Beautiful flowers might catch the eye but in professional plant trials, looks alone aren't enough.

Two varieties from Danziger’s Gem Lantana Series have received the RHS Recommended Award of Garden Merit following the first-ever RHS Lantana Trial at RHS Garden Wisley.

🌸 Gem Diva Pink

The recognition is particularly notable because 74 Lantana entries were trialled, with just 11 cultivars receiving the award.

So what were the judges looking for?

The plants were assessed under real garden conditions for:

🌸 Abundance of flowers
📅 Length of flowering season
🌿 Flower-to-foliage balance
🍃 Foliage quality
💪 Health and vigour
🌱 Natural growth habit

Each variety was grown both in containers and directly in the ground, with minimal intervention and no pruning – allowing judges to see how the plants genuinely performed rather than how they looked under ideal conditions.

For commercial horticulture, that's an important distinction.

Behind every new variety reaching a nursery or garden centre are years of breeding, propagation, growing trials and evaluation, with breeders needing to balance visual appeal with reliability, production performance and what customers ultimately want from their plants.

It also highlights the specialist skills behind plant innovation from breeders and growers to trial managers, propagators and production teams.

🌱 COULD YOU START A CAREER IN HORTICULTURE WITH NO EXPERIENCE?

What if the only thing you needed to begin was an interest in plants and a willingness to learn?

One of the world’s most famous botanic gardens is offering people the opportunity to take their first steps into horticulture with no previous horticultural experience or qualifications required.

The introductory programme at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, delivered alongside Capel Manor College, combines real-world experience with formal training.

Participants complete three practical placements across areas including:

🌸 Formal gardens
🌳 The arboretum
🌿 Kew’s famous glasshouses

Alongside working with experienced horticultural professionals, participants attend college one day a week and work towards a Level 1 horticultural qualification.

Importantly, the programme is specifically designed for people without previous horticultural qualifications or experience.

It is being offered through positive action to help address under-representation within horticulture and create opportunities for people from backgrounds currently under-represented within Kew’s Gardens Directorate.
