My two months learning under Can-sensei at TLS were an incredibly valuable experience, both as a Japanese tutor and as a person.
As an online Japanese tutor for learners in Singapore, I wanted to strengthen my teaching skills through in-person experience. As a fourth-year university student in Japan, I had only my two-month summer break available, so finding a language centre willing to welcome me for such a short period was my first challenge. It was TLS that accepted me. Although my interview did not go as well as I had hoped, Can-sensei saw potential in me and kindly offered me the opportunity to join TLS as a trainee and his mentee.
Throughout those two months, I observed Can-sensei’s online and in-person classes. After every lesson, Can-sensei made time for reflection, patiently answering my questions about lesson planning, classroom equipment, and teaching materials. These conversations went far beyond practical techniques. By sharing an educational philosophy and psychological and educational theories with me, Can-sensei encouraged me to think deeply about why we teach Japanese and the reasons behind our teaching choices.
What I appreciated most was how much Can-sensei cared about my growth as a whole person. The guidance extended beyond teaching to my mindset, interpersonal skills, and business etiquette, with thoughtful consideration for my upcoming job search. Can-sensei shared knowledge and advice so generously and even supported my living expenses in Singapore, despite the fact that I was there primarily to learn. I am deeply grateful for that kindness.
Today, I apply what I learned to my own lessons and feel better equipped to support my students. This experience also broadened my perspective on my future and helped me grow in confidence.
改めて大変感謝いたします!また会いましょう!
