More children’s homes are opening. But growth only matters if children still experience consistency.

I was recently told about Ofsted’s latest children’s social care figures, which show that the sector now has 6,700 providers and the number of children’s homes increased by 20% in the year to March 2026.

Those figures made me think about what growth looks like from a young person’s point of view.

Who remembers the small details?

Who notices when they are quieter than usual?

Who follows through on what was promised?

In children’s residential care, consistency is not a small detail. It is how trust is built.

As the sector grows, staffing cannot become only about filling spaces on a rota. It must remain about dependable people, good communication and adults who understand the responsibility that comes with showing up.
