A topic covered in our most recent 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙡𝙮 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬: Skilled Worker Shortages Threaten NT Housing and Infrastructure Growth 💡

The Northern Territory's ability to increase housing supply is being constrained by shortages of skilled tradespeople, according to the Housing Industry Association. Residential construction is competing with infrastructure, energy, gas, mining and emerging industries for electricians, carpenters and other skilled workers. HIA says the national construction industry is already around 83,000 skilled workers short and has called for stronger apprenticeship pathways, support for employers and greater regional training opportunities. For the Territory, building a larger local trades workforce will be increasingly important as major projects compete for the same skills.

A topic covered in our most recent 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙡𝙮 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬: Mango Industry Faces Worker Shortages After Working Holiday Visa Changes 💡

Northern Territory mango growers are raising concerns that changes to the Working Holiday Maker program could make it harder to attract the seasonal workforce needed for harvest. Under the changes, backpackers seeking to remain in Australia beyond 12 months will enter a ballot, with the number of second- and third-year visas reduced. The NT mango industry estimates it needs around 2,500 seasonal workers and is concerned some workers may no longer be willing to complete regional work if it does not provide a clearer pathway to a further visa.

A topic covered in our most recent 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙡𝙮 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬: New Jobs to Strengthen NDIS Support in Remote NT Communities 💡

The Federal Government has announced new community access positions across 17 remote Northern Territory communities as part of measures to address concerns about inappropriate practices by NDIS providers. The workers will help residents understand and navigate the NDIS, with the positions drawn from local Aboriginal health services. The initiative provides new employment opportunities in remote communities while strengthening local capacity to support people with disability and improve access to services. It also demonstrates the growing role of locally based workers in delivering essential services across the Territory.

A topic covered in our most recent 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙡𝙮 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬: Arnhem Land Residents Raise Concerns Over Stolen Wages Class Action 💡

Residents and organisations in north-east Arnhem Land have raised concerns that many potential claimants missed the registration deadline for a $202 million class action relating to historical wage theft affecting Aboriginal workers in the Northern Territory. The case covered workers who received little or no pay between 1933 and 1971, with local organisations saying outreach and registration processes did not adequately reach some remote communities. The issue highlights the importance of accessible employment information and support for remote communities, particularly where language, distance and complex processes can create barriers.
