The Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) is established since 1981 as the official representative body of Singapore's furniture and furnishings industry. It has a membership of over 360 companies, spanning across five key industry clusters: furniture manufacturers, interior fit-out specialists, retailers, designers, as well as materials/ components/services providers. Collectively, our industry players have a global footprint in over 80 countries todate. Currently, the council represents 95% of established furniture manufacturers in Singapore, of whom 65% have subsidiary manufacturing plants in various countries across the region, including China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. As an aggregator and multiplier in the furniture eco-system, the SFIC’s vision is to position the SIngapore furniture industry as the nexus of tomorrow’s work-life integration for sustainable urban living. In essence, the industry aims to pursue the three key pillars of market agility, urbanite-centricity and enterprise adeptness to drive the industry further. SFIC’s priority initiatives include internationalisation, design development, business innovation, digitalisation and sustainability to enable members to stay future ready and competitive, while upgrading enterprise and human capital capabilities within the industry. The SFIC also helms as the Chairman of the ASEAN Furniture Industries Council (AFIC), with the aim of further strengthening intra-ASEAN trade and its competitive advantage in the global market. 🛋️✨ Day 4: Smarter Furniture, Advanced Materials, Future Living! 🇨🇳

Day 4 of our SFIC MarketForward Grow China Mission took us through Wujiang, Jiaxing and Haining, exploring how smart technologies, precision engineering and innovative materials are transforming furniture and living spaces!

🔍 Here's what we discovered:

🔹 Smart Furniture & Motion Technology – Exploring intelligent, ergonomic solutions designed for senior living, ageing-in-place and adaptable workspaces.

🔹 Precision Engineering – Discovering the advanced mechanisms and technologies behind smarter, more functional furniture.

🔹 High-Performance Textiles – From stain-resistant and pet-friendly fabrics to sustainable fibres, uncovering materials that enhance durability and design.

💡 The takeaway? The future of furniture lies in combining smart technology, innovative materials and thoughtful design to create better living experiences.

Another insightful day of discovering new possibilities for innovation, collaboration and business growth!

🎨 Day 3 Recap: Material Innovation, Surface Technology, and Custom Engineering 💎

The SFIC delegation has just wrapped up another highly productive day in Changzhou, China. Moving from yesterday's focus on automation, Day 3 was all about the building blocks of design: advanced materials, next-generation surfaces, and precision engineering.

For Singapore brands looking to differentiate globally, today highlighted how innovative materials allow us to elevate product aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability without exploding manufacturing costs.

Here are the key takeaways from today’s three site visits:

🔹 Innovative Surface Solutions & Trend Responsiveness

We started the morning exploring the world of high-pressure laminates and decorative surface-finishing. The big lesson here was agility. Delegates observed how top-tier material suppliers respond rapidly to shifting global color and texture trends. This allows furniture makers to quickly adopt premium, high-durability finishes (like scratch- and moisture-resistant surfaces) that elevate residential and commercial projects alike.

🔹 Precision Metal Fabrication & Design-for-Manufacturing (DFM)

Our second stop moved into the realm of precision engineering and advanced metal components. Metal is increasingly vital in contemporary, modular, and outdoor furniture. We explored how advanced factories use laser cutting and robotic welding to help brands translate loose sketches into perfectly engineered, lightweight structures. This opens up massive opportunities for proprietary, outsourced OEM/ODM development.

🔹 Next-Gen Eco-Materials & High-Performance Surfaces

We wrapped up the afternoon looking into the future of advanced surfaces, focusing on "smart" textures like anti-fingerprint technology, super-matt finishes, and low-VOC, eco-friendly materials. The takeaway was clear: furniture brands can achieve ultra-premium, tactile experiences and meet strict international environmental standards through material science, rather than relying on scarce or expensive natural resources.

💡 The Strategic Insight:

True furniture differentiation isn't just about the silhouette—it’s about the skin and the skeleton. By pairing high-performance decorative surfaces with custom precision metal frames, Singapore design brands can create highly customised, durable, and sustainable products at scale.

A major thank you to all our hosts for an eye-opening day of design and engineering possibilities!

Day 2 Recap: Automation, Smart Tech, and the Future of Furniture 🚀

The SFIC (Singapore Furniture Industries Council) delegation just wrapped up an insightful, tech-driven Day 2 in Jiangsu, China. Today’s itinerary focused on Industry 4.0 integration, highlighting how automation and advanced engineering are reshaping the furniture manufacturing landscape.

From high-precision CNC machinery to intelligent motion systems, our delegates explored how traditional workflows are evolving to meet modern demands.

Key takeaways from today's three site visits:

🔹 Advanced CNC & Automation Solutions
We kicked off the morning exploring digitalised manufacturing. Our delegates observed how advanced CNC machinery, automated cutting, and software integration allow manufacturers to shift away from labor-intensive processes toward highly efficient mass customisation.

🔹 Connected Workflows & Panel Production
Our second stop focused on connected manufacturing ecosystems. The visit showcased how integrating individual machines into a unified production line can drastically optimise material yield, reduce manual intervention, and improve manufacturing scalability.

🔹 Smart Furniture & Linear Drive Systems
We wrapped up the day at the intersection of furniture and technology. The final visit demonstrated how linear actuator systems and intelligent motion controls are transforming static furniture into ergonomic, responsive, and IoT-enabled smart products.

💡 The Strategic Insight:
Adopting automation and smart components is no longer just about cutting costs — it is the ultimate pathway for manufacturers to drive precision, reduce labor dependency, and deliver higher-value, smart-living solutions globally.

Thank you to all of our incredible hosts today for opening their doors and sharing these transformative manufacturing workflows!

What will better living look like as we grow older? 🌿

At today’s SIDFest Symposium IV – Care for Living, SFIC collaborated with SIDS to explore how design can respond to the evolving needs of an ageing population.

STUCK Design shared findings from SFIC’s commissioned study on Senior Living & Environment Trends, followed by a panel discussion with SFIC President Joshua Koh, Dr Shuwen (ALFA), Ar. Rita Soh (RDC Architects) and Jason Ng (Daikin), moderated by STUCK Design.

Bringing together perspectives from furniture, design, architecture and senior living, the conversation highlighted the power of insights, expertise and industry collaboration in designing for real and evolving needs.

Thank you to SIDS for the meaningful collaboration, and to everyone who joined us.
