*Q) Confusion: Helper already served notice at my house for 30 days, why do I still have to pay for lodging after 30 days when I send her to lodging?*

Dear Employers,

We would like to clarify that the lodging charges and the notice period (or salary in lieu of notice) are two entirely separate matters under the employment arrangement.

We understand there may have been some confusion because both are commonly referred to in terms of “30 days”, but they serve different purposes and are not interchangeable.

*Lodging Charges (client’s contract with agency)*

The lodging fee of $30 per day, capped at 30 days, applies whenever the helper is required to stay at the agency’s lodging facility. These charges are incurred based on the actual period of stay and are payable regardless of the termination notice arrangements.

*Notice Period / Salary in Lieu of Notice (employer’s contract with employee helper)*

Separately, the employment contract requires either a notice period to be served or, if either party wishes to terminate immediately without serving notice, payment of one month’s salary in lieu of notice. This is compensation for the unserved notice period and is unrelated to lodging arrangements.

In summary:

* Lodging fees relate to accommodation provided by the agency and are payable for the duration of the helper’s stay at the lodging facility.
* Salary in lieu of notice relates to the employment contract and is only applicable when the required notice period is not served.
* These are separate obligations and one does not replace or offset the other.

We hope this clarifies the distinction. Please let us know if you require any further clarification.

Running a household with a domestic helper is ultimately a human relationship, not a retail product with a guaranteed outcome.

Before engaging a helper, we strongly encourage all employers to understand and accept that there are naturally risks, uncertainties, and contractual responsibilities involved for all parties should things not work out. This includes adjustment periods, communication challenges, differing expectations, personality compatibility, homesickness, family dynamics, and unforeseen situations that can only truly be assessed over time after deployment.

Just like many professional services in life, outcomes can never be guaranteed with 100% certainty. A doctor cannot guarantee recovery, a lawyer cannot guarantee victory, a school cannot guarantee results, and an agency likewise cannot ethically guarantee perfect long-term compatibility between two human parties living together.

What an agency provides is the professional service, experience, coordination, sourcing, screening, interviews, documentation processing, advisory, deployment arrangements, mediation, and after-service support throughout the employment journey.

At Master Maid Agency, we always strive to:
• Recommend suitable matches responsibly
• Mediate fairly and professionally
• Support both employers and helpers
• Resolve issues amicably whenever possible
• Be transparent about both expectations and responsibilities

However, successful employment also requires patience, communication, mutual respect, proper guidance, and realistic expectations from all parties involved.

We genuinely appreciate employers who understand that domestic employment is a shared journey requiring cooperation and understanding — not simply a transaction. Those are usually the households that build the strongest and happiest long-term helper relationships.

Recently, we encountered a case involving an employer who is currently under police investigation for the alleged physical and verbal abuse of a domestic helper. The reported acts include slapping arms, hitting the helper with a jacket, forcing her to stand alone in a dark room for extended periods, and subjecting her to verbal abuse.

At Master Employment Agency, we are as selective about the employers we work with as we are about the helpers we place. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of abuse, violence, or mistreatment of domestic helpers.

We will fully cooperate with the relevant authorities and support efforts to ensure that anyone found responsible is dealt with in accordance with the law.

We would also like to remind all employers that challenges may arise in any working relationship, but violence is never the solution. Our team is always here to provide guidance, mediation, and support to help resolve issues constructively and professionally.

Key Takeaway

Fresh helpers are often more affordable and easier to shape, but require patience and training.

Experienced helpers usually communicate better and adapt faster, but cost more and may come with established work habits.
