AI tools can do a lot. But there are some things they genuinely cannot do for you.

If you are not married, your partner has no automatic right to inherit anything from you.

It does not matter how long you have been together, or whether you own a home together, share finances, or have children etc. Under the intestacy rules, when someone dies without a Will, an unmarried partner is not recognised as a beneficiary.

Everything pass to your closest blood relatives in the order detailed in the rules. In some cases, that could mean a family member that you dislike, a distant relative, or even the Crown getting everything you worked hard for.

This is one of the most common and most painful misconceptions we come across. People assume that a long-term relationship carries legal weight, but in the eyes of the law, it does not.

Did you know there are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney(LPA)? Most people only put one in place.

The first covers Property and Financial Affairs. It allows your attorney to manage your bank accounts, pay bills, deal with property, and handle investments if you lose capacity.

The second covers Health and Welfare. It allows your attorney to make decisions about your medical treatment, care arrangements, and day-to-day wellbeing.

They are separate documents. Having one does not mean you have the other.

Without a Health and Welfare LPA, even a spouse or close family member may not have the legal authority to make decisions about your care. Without a Property and Financial Affairs LPA, your family could face significant delays accessing funds at exactly the moment they need them most.

Most people who come to us for one end up putting both in place to ensure all round cover.

A recent High Court case should be a warning to every company director who has ever signed a personal guarantee.

The case involved a retired director being pursued for a £3 million claim under a personal guarantee he had signed nearly two decades earlier. He had long since left the business. The guarantee had not.

This is not unusual. A personal guarantee does not automatically end when you resign as a director, sell your shares, or walk away from the company. Unless a lender formally releases you in writing, your liability continues, but this is not automatic.

Many guarantees are also drafted more broadly than people realise. Most cover not just a single loan but all future borrowing. Some are secured against personal assets, including your home.

Before you sign a personal guarantee, it is essential to get independent legal advice. You need to understand exactly what you are committing to, what your exposure is, and whether there is any scope to limit it.

From January 2027, employees will be able to bring an unfair dismissal claim after just six months in a job. Right now, that threshold is two years.

That is a significant shift. This means that more employees will have tribunal rights sooner, and employers are likely to use settlement agreements earlier and more frequently.
