The Frankfurt Conservation Center (FCC) has officially been launched!

Today at the KfW Villa 102 in Frankfurt, partners from science, conservation practice, finance, foundations, media, and society came together to mark an important milestone for nature conservation in Europe. As a new knowledge center for integrated nature conservation and sustainable development, the FCC brings together expertise across disciplines and sectors to contribute to biodiversity preservation, climate protection, and socio-ecological development.

With Frankfurt as its home, the FCC aims to strengthen collaboration between research, education, and practice to help address biodiversity loss and foster a healthy balance between people and nature.

One of the highlights of the evening was the official launch ceremony, when FCC Managing Director Felix Gaschick joined representatives of the FCC partner organizations on stage to activate the symbolic launch buzzer, illuminating the FCC logo and officially inaugurating the Center.

We are proud to be a founding partner of the Frankfurt Conservation Center alongside Goethe-Universität Frankfurt, Senckenberg, Institute for Social Ecological Research (ISOE), KPMG, KfW Stiftung, BioFrankfurt, Zoo Frankfurt, TRAFFIC, and Nature Trust Alliance.

A sincere thank you also to our speakers, supporters, and guests who contributed to making this launch such a memorable event and to everyone who shares our vision of a future where biodiversity and nature thrive.

Connecting Minds. Expanding Horizons.

🐎 The second group of Przewalski’s horses has safely arrived in Kazakhstan!

A record for the Return of the Wild Horses initiative has been reached: for the first time in the project's history, eight Przewalski’s horses have been transported from Europe to Central Asia in a single year.

The four mares that departed from Tierpark Berlin completed the more than 30-hour journey safely and have now joined the four stallions that arrived earlier this week at the Alibi Reintroduction Centre in Kazakhstan’s Golden Steppe.

This marks another important step towards establishing a free-ranging population of Przewalski’s horses in the region, where the species disappeared from the wild centuries ago.

A huge thank you to all partners whose dedication, expertise and teamwork made this complex operation possible. From planning and animal care to logistics and transport, this achievement reflects a truly international conservation effort.

Together, we are working to return one of the world's last truly wild horse species to its native habitat.

Another major step for wild horse conservation! 🐎

Yesterday, four Przewalski’s horses began their journey from Tierpark Berlin to Kazakhstan as part of the international reintroduction initiative “Return of the Wild Horses,” led by Prague Zoo.

Together with partners from Germany, the Czech Republic, and Kazakhstan, the horses will be transferred to the Alibi Reintroduction Centre, where they will gradually adapt to life in the wild. The long-term goal is to establish the first permanently free-ranging population of Przewalski’s horses in this region since the early 19th century - a historic milestone for the restoration of Kazakhstan’s steppe ecosystems.

As a project partner, FZS is proud to support this collaborative effort to return one of the world’s last truly wild horse species to its native habitat. We wish the horses a safe journey and look forward to following the next chapter of their return to the wild.

A big thank you to all partners involved in making this initiative possible:

🌿 What you're looking at is not a painting.

A flooded steppe in Kazakhstan's Altyn Dala landscape, where water, vegetation, and changing light create patterns that seem almost surreal.

Nature continues to astonish us with landscapes of extraordinary beauty and with the diversity of ecosystems that support life in countless forms.

Places like Altyn Dala remind us why protecting wild places matters. Conserving these landscapes means safeguarding the ecological processes that sustain wildlife today and for generations to come.

🐎 Touchdown in the Golden Steppe!

Four Przewalski’s horse stallions have safely completed their journey and are now settling into their new home in the Altyn Dala State Nature Reserve, marking the next chapter in the return of this iconic species to its native grassland habitat.

After a 15-hour flight from Prague and an 11-hour journey by truck from Kostanay, the horses were released into acclimatization enclosures shortly before 8 p.m.

Over the coming year, they will remain at the Alibi Reintroduction Center, managed by Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK) and Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative, before taking the next step in their return to the Kazakh steppe.

This milestone is the result of close collaboration between many dedicated partners working together to restore Przewalski’s horses to the Great Steppe.

Thank you to Zoo Praha, ACBK - Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan , Altyn Dala, the Forestry and Wildlife Committee Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan (FWC), and Tierpark Berlin for making this possible.

On Friday, four mares will join the stallions. The Czech Army aircraft is currently on its way to Berlin to transport the next group. ✈️

More good kulan news this week from Kazakhstan 🫏

A kulan foal has been born at the Alibi Center for Reintroduction of Wild Ungulates in Central Kazakhstan - a strong sign that the translocated kulan are adapting well to their new home in the Altyn Dala landscape.

The kulan group was moved more than 2,000 kilometers from Altyn Emel National Park in autumn 2025 as part of the long-term effort to restore the species to its ancestral range in the Golden Steppe.

Moments like this show what long-term conservation partnerships can achieve.

A huge shoutout to our partners within the , especially , our scientific partners at the Leibniz IZW, , and Conservation Solutions for the professional guidance and support.

We are also deeply grateful to the donors and supporting partners:

• Tiergarten Nürnberg
• Kolmarden Djurenpark
• Stiftelsen Nordens Ark
• Tierpark Berlin
• Zoo Wroclaw
• Korkeasaaren eläintarha – Korkeasaari Zoo
• Heinz Sielmann Stiftung
• International Takhi Group

Together, we are making the steppe a wilder place.
