Behind the Hire | Senior Growth Manager

We recently partnered with a leading national hospitality organisation to appoint a Senior Growth Manager, a pivotal leadership role focused on securing major commercial partnerships, driving new business opportunities and leading complex bid activity across highly competitive environments.

After an extensive search led by Luke Butler, one candidate consistently stood out.

With a background spanning global entertainment brands, major venues, partnerships and large-scale commercial projects, they brought a rare combination of commercial capability, strategic thinking and stakeholder influence. Their experience included leading high-profile partnerships, negotiating complex commercial agreements and delivering nationally recognised initiatives across entertainment, sport and hospitality environments.

What made this placement particularly rewarding was that this relationship had been built over several years. We first connected while they were working internationally and stayed in touch throughout different stages of their career.

Sometimes the right opportunity is not immediate; it is about understanding where someone can create the greatest impact when the timing aligns.

In a market where proven commercial leaders with genuine hospitality and partnerships experience are increasingly difficult to find, this was a fantastic outcome for both client and candidate.

This is another reminder that recruitment at its best is grounded in relationships, consistency and knowing when the right opportunity aligns.

Not all personality tests are created equal.
Most give you a score and leave you to interpret it.

Our assessments are built on the HEXACO model, one of the most widely used personality frameworks in research and recruitment globally. It measures six core dimensions and how they show up in the workplace.

But this is not about labels or “right vs wrong” scores. It is about understanding behavioural tendencies, how someone thinks, interacts, and responds in different environments.

Each report includes:
▪️ Most and least dominant traits
▪️ An executive summary
▪️ Detailed scoring across all six dimensions and practical explanations of what those traits mean.
▪️ Structured interview questions so you can validate behaviours and make more confident hiring decisions.

Because hiring decisions should be informed, not guessed.

In the latest episode of Back of House, Luke Butler and Michael Rodrigues
sit down with Daisy Tulley, Group CEO of MUCHO Hospitality Group, to discuss her unconventional journey from musician to leading a portfolio of celebrated venues.

A few themes that stood out:
▪️ Hospitality is about creating joy, not chasing trends
▪️ The best leaders stay curious, ask questions and never stop learning
▪️ Culture is built through honest conversations, clear values and genuine care for people
▪️ Growth requires stepping back from the day-to-day to work on the business, not just in it

A thoughtful conversation on leadership, scaling a hospitality business, building culture, and staying authentic while growing.

One theme that has consistently emerged from our recent conversations with hospitality clients and candidates across the US is this:

Good leaders are proactive culture builders, not just operational managers.

In a market still facing staffing pressure, hospitality groups are placing far greater emphasis on leaders who can:

- create stability
- develop teams
- maintain consistency under pressure
- build trust
- mentor future leaders
- drive accountability without burning teams out

A candidate we recently interviewed attributed a 38% increase in retention directly to “clear leadership and consistency.”

What stood out across multiple conversations was that operational capability alone is no longer enough. The strongest operators are building environments where people actually want to stay, grow and perform.

And increasingly, that is becoming one of the biggest competitive advantages in hospitality.

The Michelin Guide has not even arrived in Australia yet, but it is already changing the hospitality industry.
We are hearing it directly in conversations with chefs around the country.

For some chefs, Michelin represents opportunity and for others, pressure but many chefs we have spoken to are excited by it.

They want Australian hospitality to be pushed further.
They want more ambitious venues.
They want international recognition for the industry here.

But there is also a broader conversation emerging around sustainability, culture, and burnout.

Can Australian hospitality pursue excellence without repeating some of the toxic patterns seen overseas?

That may become one of the defining industry conversations over the next few years.

Some interviews feel like the start of a great long-term relationship.
Others make your red flag alert go off.

The reality is, interviews are a two-way street.

Candidates are not just being assessed on experience and capability, they are also getting their first real insight into a company’s culture, leadership and communication style.

And much like dating, the warning signs usually show up early.

It is important to know when to swipe right and when to politely exit the chat. We share our insights what to look out for.
