73% of employees and job seekers say career opportunities matter most in 2026.

That puts career growth ahead of pay, work-life balance, job security, management support, learning, salary and bonuses.

But only 56% of employers believe career opportunities are the top priority.

That gap matters. It means some retention strategies are still being built around what employers think people value, not what employees are actually weighing up when they decide whether to stay.

Career growth is not just about promotion. Employees want clearer pathways, useful skill development, active manager support and visible opportunities to move forward inside the business.

What risks does your business run if you continue to not address career growth in the right manner?

Board-level influence is built through clarity, not volume.

Last week, people2people hosted a Brisbane forum with Tracy Morgan FAICD on “Speaking the Board’s Language”.

The discussion focused on how leaders can communicate more effectively at board level, especially when translating operational realities into the commercial language boards need to hear.

Tracy brought a rare mix of governance, strategy and real operating experience to the session, offering clear and practical advice on how to build credibility in board-level conversations.

What did HR leaders take away?
• Clarity beats volume. Boards do not need more detail, they need better framing
• Commercial credibility is not optional. If you cannot link people, risk and financial outcomes, you lose the room
• Most leaders overestimate how well they translate operational reality into board language.

The forum gave attendees a stronger understanding of how to frame issues, connect decisions to risk and financial outcomes, and communicate with the level of clarity senior stakeholders expect.

A sharp, grounded discussion on what credible leadership looks like when the audience, context and stakes shift.

Are employers creating a future leadership shortage by hiring fewer graduates today?

On a recent Business Essentials Podcast, people2people's NSW Managing Director, Catherine Kennedy, joined to unpack a growing workforce trend: why employers are hiring fewer junior staff, the impact this is having on graduates entering the workforce, and what it could mean for the future talent pipeline.

If organisations stop investing in entry-level talent, where will the next generation of leaders come from?

Talent shortages don't disappear when markets slow down.

They shift.

And in Adelaide's property sector, growth is creating even more pressure on already stretched talent pipelines.

Peta Seaman, Managing Director at Edge Recruitment, spoke with Simone Christensen, Human Resources Business Partner at Unity Housing Company, about what Adelaide's property boom means for employers, workforce planning, and the competition for talent across the sector.

As Simone put it, “We need more people, there is less people.” That pressure is forcing employers to think beyond the usual hiring channels.

One theme stood out: organisations can no longer rely on established talent pools to meet demand.

So what should employers be paying attention to?
• Retention becomes more critical as private sector competition drives salaries higher.
• Long-term talent pipelines matter more than short-term hiring activity.
• Employers willing to hire for attitude and capability, then invest in upskilling, will have a wider talent pool to draw from.

For employers navigating growth, skills shortages, and increasing competition for talent, this is a conversation worth watching.

Leadership performance is shaped by more than capability.

Last week, in our people2people Sydney office, our team hosted an intimate roundtable with Loretta Mitchell on the Neuroscience of Leading Sales and Business Support Teams.

What did employers take away from this?
• Performance is heavily shaped by environment, not just capability
• Psychological safety is not a “nice to have”, it directly impacts results
• Clarity and consistency reduce noise and drive better ex*****on
• Leadership behaviours influence how people think and respond under pressure

Loretta brought complex neuroscience into a practical workplace context, showing how brain-based approaches can help leaders create conditions where teams are able to execute with more focus and consistency.

The session gave attendees clear, day-to-day examples of how leadership behaviour affects performance, and why strong teams are built through both accountability and the right environment.

A practical, thoughtful discussion on what it really takes to lead people well in high-performance settings.

Last week, our people2people Perth team took part in the 2026 Walk for Justice.

The event supports Law Access by raising funds for West Australians who cannot afford legal assistance, while recognising the pro bono work of the WA legal profession.

Held on National Pro Bono Day as part of National Law Week, the walk brings attention to the practical role pro bono legal support plays across the community.

Law Access facilitates pro bono legal assistance for people who cannot afford a lawyer, working toward equal access to justice for all West Australians.

A meaningful cause, and one our Perth team was proud to support.

Employment contracts can feel like a formality.

They are not.

When a workplace issue turns into a claim, the contract is often one of the first documents put under pressure. The wording, the obligations, the notice terms, the classifications, the record keeping — all of it can matter.

Leanne Lazarus, Specialist Recruitment Manager at people2people, speaks with Jonathan Mamaril, Director at South Geldard Lawyers, about the contract risks employers often miss until they are already exposed.

As Jonathan puts it, “employment contracts only become simple until they’re tested.”

They discuss how a General Protections claim can open the door to broader issues around compliance, documentation, and the way employment decisions have been managed.

For employers and HR teams, the lesson is practical:
• Review contracts before there is a dispute
• Keep terms current with legislation and workplace changes
• Document decisions clearly and consistently
• Treat complaints and claims as risk signals, not isolated events

For HR leaders, business owners, and hiring managers, this episode is a useful reminder: good contracts do not just protect the business when things go wrong. They help prevent avoidable problems in the first place.
