What’s the real cost of a vacant position?

When businesses think about the cost of hiring, they often think about advertising, recruitment fees, onboarding and training.

But what about the cost of not filling the role?

A vacant position can have an impact beyond simply having an empty chair.

Lost sales 📉: Leads may not be followed up, opportunities can be missed, and potential new business may be left on the table.

Lost productivity⏳: Existing team members take on extra work, which can cause projects to take longer and workloads to build up.

Customer service📞 : When a team is stretched, response times can increase, and customer service can be affected.

Team pressure 🤯 : Carrying an additional workload over a long period can impact morale, engagement and retention.

Lost revenue: Sometimes the cost of a vacancy isn’t an obvious expense. It can be the revenue that could have been generated if the right person was in the role.

Every business is different, so the cost of a vacancy will look different too.

But it’s worth asking: “What is this vacancy already costing us?”

Sometimes, the cost of leaving a position unfilled can be greater than the cost of filling it.

Interviews can be nerve-wracking.

But the right preparation can help you feel much more comfortable.

One of the best ways to prepare? Think about how you’ll answer common questions.

Here’s the secret 🤫... interview questions aren’t rocket science. Thinking about examples from your experience that could help you answer them will make you feel more confident on the day.

It’s a bit like presenting. No one necessarily loves doing it, but the more you prepare, the easier it becomes.

We’ve put together a free downloadable Common Interview Questions PDF to help you prepare and put your best foot forward at your next interview.

Happy National Family Business Day 2026!

We’re proud to be a family business, but we’re also lucky to work with so many other family-owned and family-run businesses across South Australia.

One of the things we love most is getting to know the people behind the businesses we work with and seeing the products, services and ideas they bring to life.

Family businesses come in all shapes and sizes, and behind each one are people working hard, adapting, growing and often passing their knowledge down to the next generation.

So today, cheers to all the families behind their businesses and to the generations who have built them and everyone continuing to grow them today! 🥂

With National Family Business Day 2026 coming up, we thought we’d share a little bit about how Blackman Recruitment came to be.

Blackman Recruitment was started by Joanne in 2022 after many years in corporate recruitment. Joanne wanted to get back to what she enjoyed most about recruitment — working with people and building genuine relationships.

What started as Joanne working on her own didn’t stay that way for long.

Her daughter, Arielle, joined to help with the branding and marketing. Four years later, she’s still here! Then came her son, Lachlan, who joined the business and helped grow our industrial recruitment division.

What started as one person’s idea has grown into an (accidental) family business, with three family members working across our professional and industrial recruitment services.

There have been plenty of changes, challenges and lessons along the way, but one thing has stayed the same... people are at the centre of what we do.

We’re proud of what we’ve built together so far and, most importantly, we’re excited to see where the next chapter takes us.

Happy National Family Business Day to all the family businesses out there. To find out more about National Family Business Day, click the link below 👇

There’s truly nothing better than local SA food products! 🍓

On Monday, our team headed up to Beerenberg for the Family Business Association’s Meet the Owners event, and what a great afternoon it was!

It was the perfect way to kick off National Family Business Week, hearing the story behind such an iconic South Australian family business and seeing how Beerenberg has grown and evolved across generations.

There was plenty to take away from their story, from growing the business to adapting to changes in the business structure. A big thank you to the Beerenberg team and FBA AU for a fantastic afternoon!

Have you ever sent an old resume when applying for a job? 😅

Whether it was by accident or because, let’s be honest, updating your resume is life admin that’s easy to put off... we see a lot of out-of-date resumes.

And it can be costly.

Why? The person reading your resume has to assume you’re still in the last role listed, or, if there’s an end date, that you haven’t worked since then.

Missing information can make it harder for the reader to tell whether you’re the right person for the role.

If your current role has given you the most valuable skills and experience for the job you’re applying for, but it isn’t on your resume, the person reading it simply won’t know.

Our recommendation?
Keep your resume simple and easy to update. A straightforward Word document is often better than an overly designed resume that takes ages to edit.

And when you save it, give it a clear file name. Avoid just calling it “Resume”. You’d be surprised how confusing it gets when you have multiple documents with the same name — no wonder the wrong one gets sent 🫠

A few minutes keeping your resume up to date and checking the file before you hit send can make all the difference.

“But it’s only a short-term contract…”

We sometimes hear this from candidates who are looking for work. And we understand why. When you have bills to pay and a family to support, job security matters.

But taking a short-term contract doesn’t mean you’re giving up on finding a permanent role. In fact, it can sometimes help.

While you’re working, you’re continuing to build your skills, gain experience, meet people and stay active in the workforce. And being employed can sometimes make you more attractive to businesses looking to hire.

A contract role certainly doesn’t have to be the final destination. It can be used as a helpful stepping stone for your next career move.

It can give you an income, keep your experience current and put you back in the driver’s seat when looking for your next permanent opportunity.

So, if you’re looking for work, don’t automatically rule out temporary or contract roles. Sometimes the role you take today can help you find the role you really want tomorrow.
