🦺📆 National Safe Work Month: Action across all workplaces

In week 4, as National Safe Work Month draws to a close, Safe Work Australia encourages workplaces to turn October's conversations into actions that create lasting change.

Now is the time to take stock of what has been learned and identify practical improvements to carry forward. Whether it's improving a process, strengthening consultation, addressing a workplace risk or enhancing support for workers, even small actions can contribute to safer and healthier work.

Mackay Safety and 4PS Software MD Mick Storch agrees: Every conversation about WHS has the potential to drive positive change. By turning discussion into action, workplaces can help create safer and healthier work for all, for life.

Industry urged to strengthen known hazard controls⛏️⚠️

Safe Work Australia has called for stronger action to prevent harm, following the release of “confronting” national data on work-related injuries and fatalities.

The report, Key Work Health and Safety Statistics Australia 2026, revealed that vehicle incidents remained the leading cause of work-related traumatic injury fatalities, accounting for 41 per cent of worker deaths. Falls from heights and being hit by falling objects were the next most common causes.

🦺📆 National Safe Work Month: For the future - The long-term impact

In week 3, Safe Work Australia encourages workplaces to think beyond immediate incidents and consider how work-related harm can affect workers over time.

As part of our focus on the future, we’re also thinking about how changes in technology, society and climate are reshaping the way we work. These changes can introduce new hazards, create emerging risks or change how existing risks need to be managed.

NSW sharpens its approach to mine dust ⚒️💨

New air quality assessment methods will strengthen guidance on dust control at mines in New South Wales, following an update by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA).

The Approved Methods for the Modelling and Assessment of Air Pollutants are used by industry and councils to model air quality impacts from sites such as mines.

📸🦺 Flashback to Mackay Safety and 4PS Software Founder and MD Mick Storch and Operations Manager Barbara Johnson at DRILL Impact Summit in Brisbane last year.

Did you know that Mick has been involved in occupational health and safety for 30 years?

After starting his career as a qualified motor mechanic and working within the agriculture, mining and manufacturing industries, Mick launched his safety consultancy, Mackay Safety, in 2004, which continues to provide expert safety advice to clients throughout Australia.

Mick firmly believes that safety forms the foundation of a successful and accountable business. When a business has a culture based on high safety standards and continuous improvement, you know everyone is working with safety as their top priority.

In 2009, after seeing SMEs continue to struggle with safety compliance, Mick began developing 4PS Software. 4PS eliminates manual handling of important compliance data, systems, and processes. It assists in managing people, plant, process and procedure compliance in the mining, METS and construction industries. 4PS improves business outcomes and safety by reducing costs and the human errors that often plague compliance processes for SMEs.

Mick has spent considerable time working with exploration and mining companies, auditing their drilling operations and developing iPlod drilling management software. iPlod provides real-time visibility, full customisation, and true offline capability built for the field. From contract management to reporting and client portals, it delivers complete operational control.

In the spirit of raising the level of safety within the industry, Mick has written a guideline for surface exploration drilling activities, with input from major mining companies, and has provided it to the industry free of charge.

🦺📆 It's week two of National Safe Work Month, an opportunity for employers across Australia to renew their commitment to safe and healthy workplaces.

This week, Safe Work Australia's focus is: For health: What WHS protects. This theme highlights the many ways work can affect both physical and psychological health.

The Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2023-2033 identifies ongoing challenges including musculoskeletal conditions, psychological injuries, occupational diseases, psychosocial risks and exposure to harmful substances. Addressing these risks is critical to creating healthier workplaces and preventing harm before it occurs.

Many workplace hazards can have impacts that are not immediately visible. Exposure to hazardous chemicals and airborne contaminants, repetitive work, high job demands and fatigue can all contribute to serious long-term health outcomes.

This week, we encourage workplaces to identify one physical or psychosocial hazard and discuss how it could affect workers' health. Using the activity kit, you can map hazards, review existing controls and identify opportunities for improvement: https://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/doc/nswm-2026-activity-kit?utm_campaign=meetedgar&utm_medium=social&utm_source=meetedgar.com
