Wise helpers know that the social media these days can create delusions, and if one is not careful, she will fall victim to an emotional and mental prison within herself by comparing herself with others. In life, everyone has their own battle and every battle is unique. In times of confusion, disappointments or challenges, instead of posting to the social media and/or taking advice from unqualified source, speak to a qualified and unbiased advisor.
Here in myKakak, we believes good agencies have an important part to play in supporting good employers and good helpers with unbiased yet professional advisory.
We are aware of a Facebook post about the well-being of a foreign domestic worker (FDW), Istiqomah Penindasan. The post in the Facebook group “FDW in Singapore (working conditions forum)” said that Istiqomah never received her salary from her employer for 1.5 years, never ate rice, was confined in her employer’s house, never held her handphone and was working non-stop.
The claims are unsubstantiated.
MOM had spoken to Istiqomah and will be interviewing the neighbour’s FDW, who uploaded the Facebook post, to clarify on her post.
The facts are as follows:
Istiqomah received all her salary during her period of employment, and has an agreement with her employer to remit part of her salary back home at the end of every month. She was given rice, meat and vegetables for her meals, as well as bread and biscuits if she needed more food. She had access to the house keys and could leave her employer’s house as and when she wanted to. Her employer had initially given her a used mobile phone at the start of her employment, but she subsequently decided to purchase her own, which she was able to use at all times. In her interview with us, Istiqomah also confirmed that she had sufficient rest and was not overworked.
We urge all FDWs and members of the public to report any well being issues directly to MOM or the organisations below, rather than to post them on social media. In this way, we can verify the accuracy of the information and offer assistance to FDWs more quickly.
