SHRI comprises different core products and services; SHRI Academy, SHRI Corporate Learning & Consultancy Hub, SHRI Capability Development Centre and The Singapore Professionals’ & Executives’ Co-operative (SPEC). Some of ou

r core initiatives include: Singapore’s first HR Accreditation Framework, National Workplace Happiness Survey, Salary & Productivity Survey, Singapore HR Awards and Singapore HR Challenge. Organised by SHRI, the 11th World HR Congress and Business-Connect Exposition 2006 recorded a high point for the HR profession in Singapore. The event attracted more than 2,000 delegates from more than 60 countries – the highest number ever recorded in the history of WFPMA’s World HR Congresses. The exposition was also the largest HR show in Singapore, with more than 90 exhibitors representing the human capital industry. Subsequently, SHRI launched its inaugural, local and international event: Singapore HR Congress & Business-Connect Exposition. SHRI is an active contributor to the global HR community, having held the office of President of the Asia Pacific Federation of Human Resource Management (APFHRM) for the 2005-2006 term. Singapore became the third country after the USA and the UK, where SHRI as its national HR representative was appointed Secretary-General and Treasurer of the World Federation of Personnel Management Associations (WFPMA) for the term 2006-2008. In 2015, SHRI celebrates a momentous occasion: 50 years of championing human capital excellence, and commitment and contribution to the HR community.

"There are 3 unstoppable phenomena in the workforce dynamics today where leaders will need to proactively address and make good.

Welcome to the New BAU-Business As Unusual: evolving marketplace driven by geopolitical and business uncertainties, super-aging workforce and what some have called out as the Mental Health pandemic.

As leaders, our roles must certainly go beyond managing by KPIs to also proactively enable the people in our charge to emerge stronger by focusing on the possibilities and opportunities.

More people centric business leaders and business savvy HR leaders will need to partner and constructively support their organizations and people to thrive sustainably amidst the unstoppable phenomena.

Ultimately that would mean a collective effort to rally our people and build our human capital. It should not just be HR's responsibility.

Enabling the workforce is indeed every leader's business."

A passionate call to action by Ian Wong, MD and Group Head International, UOB. SHRI is certainly pleased to co-opt Ian, a business leader with responsibilities and experience leading multiple international entities, into the Council committee.

No two retrenchment conversations are the same. But they all carry the same weight.

Getting the process right is necessary but it isn't enough. Beyond policies, procedures, and compliance lies the human side of HR: supporting people through some of the most difficult moments in their careers.

And that‘s the Heart Work we do in HR.

If you're interested in deepening your understanding of this area, SHRI Academy's 1-day Employment Severance course covers the legal and procedural framework and the human dimensions the framework alone can't address. Reach out to our team for more information.

Not all HR conversations start with problems. Sometimes… they begin with life changing news.

And often, we are the first to hear it.

In HR, we sit in between the joyful moments, and the uncertain ones. We don’t just manage policies. We hold space for people navigating real life.

Because behind every question… is a moment in someone’s life. And HR is often where that moment begins.

"Last week, I tried my hand at using vibe coding to create a prototype CRM for my team. It took all of 20min. Inspired, I kept going (and ran out of free credits within the hour!) The process was simple, magical – and yet, a little unsettling.

As the code flowed seemingly effortlessly, I was struck again by how the AI transition wasn’t just a technological disruption, but a human disruption. As AI agents move from "tools" to "teammates," the question for HR leaders isn’t just what do we implement or upskill, it’s how do we hold people together while everything shifts beneath them?

For me, I believe that we have to be the human anchor, a steady point of reference. This means moving:

Beyond Rewriting Roles: HR’s job is to communicate transparently about what AI means for careers, not spin it, but actually tell people what's changing and what support exists.

Beyond Basic AI Upskilling: We must foster a culture that values long-term growth over short-term task efficiency.

Beyond Workflow Design: We need to partner with managers to ensure that when the "drudgery" is gone, the work that remains is actually meaningful.

The AI transition doesn't have to be a cold one. By focusing on relationships, trust, and dignity, HR ensures that technology serves the people, not the other way around.

Let’s be the anchor. ⚓️ "

At SHRI, we recognise leaders who are shaping the evolving role of HR. Dawn reminds us that even as work continues to transform, what matters most remains unchanged - how we support, connect, and show up for our people.

For much of my career, I worked across sales, operations, management, labour relations, and technology before deepening my focus on HR. That breadth gave me something I carry into every conversation about the profession: an outside view of what HR actually looks like from the business side. And what the business has often seen is a function that shows up after something has already gone wrong.

That reactive posture is still common. Roles are filled only when vacancies arise. Conflicts are resolved after they escalate. Success is measured through headcount ratios and compliance metrics. In a slower, less data-driven era, this may have been sufficient. In an AI-driven economy, the window for comfortable incrementalism is closing faster than most organisations realise.

The shift I believe we need is toward predictive thinking. Forecasting attrition risks before someone resigns. Building continuous sentiment intelligence that feeds leadership decisions in real time. Mapping workforce capabilities against where the business is actually heading. These are available now, to any HR function willing to invest in the infrastructure.

Through my work with the Asia AI Association, I have seen first-hand that AI does not threaten the humanity of HR. It frees us from repetitive, transactional work so we can do what only humans truly can: build trust, exercise judgement, and lead with empathy.

Even under cost pressure, two areas cannot be deprioritised: people analytics infrastructure and AI literacy within HR teams. They are the foundation on which every other investment yields a return. An HR function that cannot read its own data cannot guide the business. An HR leader who cannot engage meaningfully with AI risks being outpaced by it.

Strategic relevance is earned through the depth of insight HR brings to the decisions that truly matter.

At SHRI, we are proud to spotlight leaders who are shaping the future of HR through purpose and principles.

Leaders like Imran remind us that to remain relevant, HR must evolve from a reactive administrative function into a predictive, AI-empowered partner that translates people data into business foresight.
