That gleaming superyacht in Monaco? It started life as a pirate hunter.

"Yacht" comes from the Dutch "jacht."
Short for "jachtschip."
A hunting ship.
A chasing ship.

1600s. The Dutch built them fast, light and shallow, perfect for running down pirates and smugglers in their coastal waters. Not luxury. A weapon.

Then it went soft.

In 1660 the Dutch gave Charles II a yacht, the Mary (as in the image), to mark his return to the throne.

He loved it, raced it, and the English aristocracy followed.

Within a generation the chase ship had become a rich man's plaything.

So the word drifted. From the hunt, to the harbour, to the holiday.

Every now and then, a candidate asks if they need to pay me.

The answer is always NO.

In my line of work, if a recruiter is asking the candidate for money, something's off.

Which got me thinking about where dodgy business practices got their names.

Take slush fund.
Maritime in origin.
Financial in ex*****on.
Often criminal in application.
And with a cracking backstory.

"Slush" comes from the 17th century ship's galley.
The fatty residue skimmed off the top when boiling salt pork or beef. Thick, oily, smelled awful.

Cooks skimmed it daily and stored it in barrels.
When the ship docked, the slush was sold ashore to candlemakers, soap makers and tallow merchants.

The proceeds went to the cook, the crew, or the officers, depending on the ship and the era.

The first written reference is William McNally's 1839 book, "Evils and Abuses in the Naval and Merchant Service," which documented the practice and criticised the corruption around it.

Within twenty years it had taken on its modern meaning.
Hidden cash, off the books, often for bribes or political favours.

From galley grease to Watergate.

Every week, candidates tell me the same thing in interviews.

Working flat out. Career standing still.

Sound familiar? You're "in irons."

The phrase wasn't born at sea. It was born from trouble.

Originally referring to a shackled prisoner.

Then sailors stole it and gave it a sharper meaning.

A sailing boat is "in irons" when it points directly into the wind and stalls.
The sails flap uselessly.
The rudder does nothing.
You can't steer, can't move.

Today, it's used in business, in recruitment, in your career.
Working hard, going nowhere.
..The fix isn't more effort. It's a change of angle.

Around a fifth of the maritime workforce are women.
At sea, it's closer to 1%.
Today is International Day for Women in Maritime.

A day to recognise the women working across shipping, marine and offshore.
From ships to ports to offices.

Maritime is slowly diversifying, particularly in shore based roles.
We play our part helping businesses secure the best talent.

Diverse workforces make more money.
The McKinsey data has shown that year after year.

Closer to home, we celebrate the four women who shape Angle Recruitment.
Brilliant at what they do, and the reason our clients keep coming back.

Jasmine Poh, Ruzette Swart, Jo Tonissen, Cody Lee.

I'm lucky enough to work with and speak to inspirational women across this industry every day.

I worked on cruise ships. I saw things I cannot unsee 😳

Naked passengers walking the decks 🫣

Occasionally you’d spot someone strolling the deck, completely naked, utterly calm, just… enjoying the ocean breeze.

Living their best life. Slightly too freely.

In some people, seasickness patches don't just calm the stomach.
They calm the inhibitions too.

🤢

But here’s the thing.

The word “nausea” goes back around 2,500 years.
To Ancient Greece.

From naus.
Meaning ship.

The original word, nausia, had just one meaning.
Seasickness.

Today, “nausea” describes that same sick feeling…
just no longer limited to seasickness.

The sea still finds ways to humble you.

Sometimes gently.
Sometimes memorably.
Sometimes… in full view of the lido deck.
