✈️ Bombardier to Create 200+ Skilled Jobs as it Invests S$100 Million to Expand Singapore Aviation Hub

Singapore's position as a leading aerospace and business aviation hub has received another major boost.

Canadian business jet manufacturer Bombardier will invest approximately S$100 million (US$78 million) to significantly expand its service centre at Seletar Aerospace Park.

The expansion will nearly double the size of the existing facility, increasing its footprint from approximately 221,000 square feet to more than 400,000 square feet. Once completed, Bombardier's Singapore facility is expected to become the company's largest business aircraft service centre in the world.

🛠️A Full-Service Aviation Centre

The expanded facility will provide a comprehensive range of services including Aircraft maintenance and modifications, Avionics installation and upgrades, Component repair and overhaul, Aircraft painting and interior refurbishment, 24/7 aircraft-on-ground emergency support, and Customer lounge and crew rest facilities

🌏 Why is Bombardier expanding in Singapore?

The company cites several key growth drivers Rising numbers of high-net-worth individuals and entrepreneurs in Asia; Growth of family offices establishing operations in Singapore; Increasing utilisation of private and business jets across the region and Growing deliveries of new-generation business aircraft

Singapore has become one of Asia's most important centres for business aviation, making it a strategic location for Bombardier's long-term growth plans.

👨‍🔧 More than 200 New High-Skilled Jobs

The expansion is expected to create over 200 highly skilled positions, increasing Bombardier's local workforce from around 300 employees today to more than 500 over time.

Potential roles may include Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, Licensed Aircraft Technicians, Avionics Specialists, Aircraft Inspectors, Operations and Support Personnel, Engineering and Technical Professionals etc.

🔧 Young People Choosing Skilled Trades to Future-Proof Their Careers - what are the reasons?

For decades, students were often told that the path to success was straightforward: earn a university degree, secure an office job and build a professional career.

But as artificial intelligence rapidly transforms the workplace, a growing number of young people are beginning to rethink that formula.

A recent report highlighted how some teenagers in the United States are deliberately choosing vocational and skilled trade education as a way to "AI-proof" their futures. Instead of pursuing traditional white-collar careers that may be increasingly affected by automation, they are training to become electricians, plumbers, welders, automotive technicians, construction specialists and other skilled trades professionals.

Their reasoning is simple. While AI can analyse data, generate reports and automate many routine office tasks, it is still much harder for technology to replace workers who build, repair, install and maintain real-world infrastructure. Skilled trades require hands-on expertise, practical problem-solving, adaptability and on-site decision-making that remain difficult for both AI and robots to replicate.

Ironically, Artificial intelligence is also now reshaping industries, as it is also driving a massive boom in data centres and digital infrastructure across the United States. For one, Meta believes the future of AI will rely not just on software engineers, but also on skilled workers such as electricians, welders and fiber technicians who help build and maintain that infrastructure. .

At the same time, many countries are facing serious shortages of skilled tradespeople, as large numbers of experienced workers are approaching retirement, while demand for electricians, welders, mechanics, HVAC technicians and construction professionals continues to grow. This has created strong employment prospects and attractive earning potential for those entering these fields.

🇸🇬 But does Singapore's Gen Z think the same way?

To some extent, yes — but the situation in Singapore is somewhat different.

Singapore's younger generation is becoming more open to vocational and applied education pathways than previous generations. However, most are not choosing ITE or polytechnic routes primarily because of fears about AI replacing jobs.

Instead, the shift is driven by several factors like Better career prospects, Reduced stigma surrounding vocational education, Stronger progression pathways from ITE (Institute of Education) to polytechnics and universities and Growing recognition that skills matter as much as academic qualifications.

Unlike the United States, Singapore's public universities are heavily subsidised, so student debt is generally less of a concern. Vocational education is also no longer viewed as a "dead end". Today, students can progress from ITE to polytechnic and eventually to university, creating multiple pathways for career advancement.

🤖That said, traditional skilled trades still face perception challenges.

Many students and parents continue to favour careers in banking, technology, healthcare, law and professional services. As a result, occupations such as plumbing, electrical work, welding and construction often attract fewer local youths than employers would like.

📈 What is changing is the growing popularity of technical and applied skills.

More young Singaporeans are exploring fields such as, Precision Engineering, Robotics & Automation, Advanced Manufacturing, Aerospace Maintenance, Semiconductor Manufacturing, Healthcare Technology and Sustainability & Green Energy.

💡 These careers combine hands-on expertise with advanced technology and are increasingly viewed as future-ready professions.

💼 "Even a CEO's job can be replaced by AI." — Skills That Banks Want Are Changing

Singapore's banking sector continues to offer strong career opportunities in 2026, supported by growth in wealth management, cross-border banking, digital transformation and artificial intelligence. As one of Asia's leading financial hubs, Singapore remains a key destination for banking talent and a gateway to regional and global financial markets.

However, the nature of banking recruitment is changing significantly.

🏦 Rather than broad-based hiring across all functions, banks are becoming more selective and focusing on specialised, higher-value roles that support technology, innovation, digital transformation and increasingly complex regulatory requirements.

Among Singapore's local banking giants, DBS, OCBC and UOB are all actively hiring, but each offers different career pathways.

🚀 DBS Bank continues to recruit in areas such as Technology and Data, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Institutional Banking, Management Associate Programmes etc.

💼 OCBC is expanding opportunities in Wealth Management, Private Banking, Digital Transformation etc.

🌏 UOB remains attractive for those seeking regional ASEAN exposure, with hiring focused on Corporate Banking, Trade Finance, Treasury, Digital Banking etc.

Beyond the local banks, international financial institutions such as JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, HSBC, Standard Chartered, Citi and Goldman Sachs continue to recruit talent in Singapore across investment banking, capital markets, technology, AI, cybersecurity and graduate analyst programmes.

The future of banking is no longer just about understanding finance. It is increasingly about combining financial knowledge with technology skills. Professionals who can work alongside AI, leverage data effectively, understand digital platforms and navigate an increasingly complex regulatory landscape will be best positioned for long-term success.

For fresh graduates, DBS remains one of the most attractive banking employers in Singapore, even as AI and automation reshape the industry.

DBS will continue to invest in young talent despite accelerating AI adoption. In May 2026, CEO Tan Su Shan announced that DBS expects to bring in more than 500 young local talents this year through its Management Associate, Internship and Traineeship programmes, bringing the total number of young local hires between 2024 and 2026 to nearly 1,600.

One of the most talked-about comments from Tan Su Shan recently was:

"Even a CEO's job can be replaced by AI."

The statement was not a prediction that CEOs will disappear. Rather, it highlighted a broader reality that AI is becoming increasingly capable of performing many analytical, operational, informational and decision-support tasks that were traditionally handled by highly skilled professionals and senior executives.

🤖 AI Economy Reality Check: Fresh Graduates Now Need Internship, soft skills Experience, Not Just Degrees.

Industry leaders say graduates now need internship experience, project portfolios, hackathons, startup exposure, freelance work, and real-world problem solving adaptability, critical thinking, and soft skills to stay competitive as AI transforms entry-level jobs and workplace expectations.

Furthermore, technical knowledge alone is no longer enough in the AI era. Human-centric capabilities such as leadership, adaptability, communication, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and lifelong learning will become even more valuable as AI becomes embedded across workplaces.

At the “The Future Of Work: Jobs And Skills In An AI-powered World” panel during Asia Tech x Summit 2026 at Capella Singapore, business, government, and education leaders discussed how AI is rapidly reshaping industries, changing workforce expectations, and redefining the skills needed in the global economy.

Panellists including Acting Minister for Transport & Senior Minister of State for Finance Jeffrey Siow, Singapore Management University President Professor Lily Kong, and Singtel Singapore CEO Ng Tian Chong highlighted growing concerns that AI-driven efficiency is reducing some entry-level opportunities while transforming many mid-career roles.

🚀 Professor Lily Kong noted that universities may need to prepare students not just for their “first job”, but for the “third-year job”, as traditional entry-level functions continue evolving under AI automation. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Siow encouraged young people to embrace less conventional career paths, saying the AI economy may bring “fewer safe paths, but more exciting paths”.

As AI rapidly reshapes industries and automates many routine entry-level tasks, such pathways include the most valuable Internships in Singapore today are those that combine:

🚀AI literacy, digital skills, business understanding, and strong human-centric capabilities

🌏Internship demand is growing strongly in areas such as AI & data analytics, cybersecurity, product management, digital transformation, semiconductors, sustainability, and HealthTech.

Popular roles now include AI analyst interns, data analytics interns, machine learning interns, cybersecurity interns, digital transformation interns, ESG analysts, and healthcare innovation interns.

These opportunities help students build highly sought after skills such as Python, SQL, Power BI, prompt engineering, cloud security, AI workflow tools, communication, leadership, and strategic thinking.

Anthony Tan and Grab: Disrupt Before Being Disrupted

Grab co-founder and Group CEO Anthony Tan was recently named Businessman of the Year at the 41st Singapore Business Awards — recognising his leadership in transforming Grab from a ride-hailing startup into Southeast Asia’s leading superapp ecosystem. 🚀

Under Tan’s leadership, Grab is entering a new phase of growth powered by AI. In 2025, the company achieved its first-ever full-year profit of US$268 million while continuing strong growth across mobility, food delivery, and financial services. At GrabX 2026, Grab unveiled 13 AI-powered solutions including driver copilots, merchant assistants, shopping tools, and AI-driven safety monitoring systems.

Grab is strengthening its regional and international footprint through strategic expansion and innovation. The acquisition of Foodpanda Taiwan’s delivery business marked Grab’s first major move beyond Southeast Asia.

“Disrupt Before Being Disrupted.” He believes businesses can no longer afford to stay comfortable in a world being reshaped by AI. Instead of waiting for disruption, organizations must proactively reinvent themselves.

Companies can no longer afford to stay comfortable in a world being rapidly reshaped by AI. One of the company’s boldest internal initiatives was the “G/AI Sprint” — a 9-week company-wide AI transformation program where employees paused normal workflows to experiment with generative AI and rapidly prototype new products. The goal was to accelerate innovation while increasing productivity across the organization.

Tan famously said: “Humans who don’t embrace AI will be replaced by humans who embrace AI.”

Moving ahead, he hopes that Grab scale up beyond the cities they are serving now to show that can improve lives of drivers, merchants, and consumers, solve real human problems, reducing friction for everyday users and have a more profound impact on society.

Why Singapore Is Betting on High‑Spending Business Travelers

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) plans for 2026 are centered around its long-term “Tourism 2040” strategy — growing tourism through higher-value visitors, premium experiences, sustainability, and major international events rather than just increasing tourist numbers.

Singapore’s long-term “Tourism 2040” roadmap, which aims to:
• triple MICE tourism receipts by 2040,
• increase tourism spending rather than visitor numbers,
• position Singapore as the world’s top business-events destination.

Singapore is targeting tourism receipts of around:
• S$47–50 billion annually by 2040.

Singapore is shifting its tourism strategy away from simply attracting more tourists and instead focusing on visitors who generate higher economic value — especially business travellers.

Why business travellers matter

Singapore sees business travellers as especially valuable because they spend about twice as much as leisure tourists.

STB plans to:
• attract more global conferences and exhibitions,
• expand convention capabilities,
• strengthen Singapore as Asia’s premier MICE hub, triple MICE tourism receipts by 2040.

Singapore sees MICE tourism — Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions — as one of the most profitable tourism segments.

According to the Singapore Tourism Board:

• business travellers spend nearly twice as much as leisure tourists,
• they stay in premium hotels,
• dine at upscale restaurants,
• attend corporate events,
• and often extend their trips for leisure and shopping.

Singapore competes through:

• premium experiences,
• world-class infrastructure,
• safety,
• connectivity,
• luxury hospitality,
• and global business events.

Major investments supporting the plan

There are several big infrastructure and tourism projects designed to support high-value tourism:

✈️ Expansion of Changi Airport with Terminal 5

• expected to increase passenger capacity significantly,
• improve Singapore’s role as a global transit hub.

🏙️ New MICE and entertainment venues- Singapore is investing in:

• convention spaces,
• luxury hotels,
• integrated resorts,
• event arenas,
• lifestyle districts.

🌿 Premium and wellness tourism - Singapore also wants to attract:

• wellness travellers,
• luxury cruise passengers,
• high-end experiential tourists.

Industry observers estimate Tourism 2040 could support:

• 10,000–20,000+ additional tourism-related jobs over the next decade,
• with several thousand likely tied directly to the MICE ecosystem alone.

Bigger economic impact than raw job numbers - Singapore’s strategy is also about creating:

• higher-paying jobs,
• more skilled roles,
• and more productivity-driven tourism careers.

Singapore is betting big on business events—because they pay off. Under its Tourism 2040 roadmap, the country aims to triple MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conf...

Why Singapore's Punggol Digital District Matters: the country’s next major digital and innovation hub

UOB has officially opened its new S$500 million technology and innovation hub at Punggol Digital District (PDD), with 400 staff already working on-site — and plans to eventually house more than 3,000 employees there.

But this move is about much more than just a new office building.

It is part of Singapore’s bigger plan to transform Punggol into the country’s next major digital and innovation hub.

💡 What Is Punggol Digital District?

Punggol Digital District was designed to become Singapore’s first fully integrated smart and sustainable business district.

The idea is to bring together:
• Tech companies
• Banks
• Startups
• Universities
• Researchers
• Government agencies

all within one connected ecosystem.

Instead of operating separately, companies and institutions work side-by-side to develop new technologies, train talent and test digital solutions in real-world environments.

🏦 Why UOB’s Move Is Important

UOB becoming one of the first major banks in PDD helps position the district as a future fintech and AI hub.

The bank says the new centre will focus on:
✔ AI and data analytics
✔ Digital banking innovation
✔ Cybersecurity
✔ Workforce upskilling
✔ Regional ASEAN technology development

This aligns closely with Singapore’s wider goals of becoming a leader in:
• Fintech
• AI adoption
• Smart Nation technology
• High-value digital jobs

🎓 A Strong Link Between Industry & Education

One unique feature of PDD is its close integration with the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT).

Students, researchers and companies are intentionally placed together to encourage:
• internships
• innovation projects
• research collaboration
• startup development
• future job pipelines

This gives businesses direct access to future tech talent while giving students real-world industry exposure.

🚇 Bringing More Jobs Outside The CBD

PDD is also part of Singapore’s effort to decentralise jobs away from the city centre.

The district is expected to create thousands of jobs in the northeast region and reduce the need for long commutes into the CBD.

With the new Punggol Coast MRT station and integrated residential areas nearby, the area is being developed into a complete “live-work-play” ecosystem.

🤖 Building Singapore’s Future Digital Economy

PDD is expected to become a major hub for:
• AI
• Robotics
• Fintech
• Cybersecurity
• Smart-city technology

Companies and agencies connected to the district already include:
• UOB
• OCBC
• GovTech
• CSA
• Panasonic

The long-term goal is to create an innovation cluster similar to one-north — but focused on digital technologies and the future economy.

📈 More Than Just Offices

UOB’s investment signals growing confidence in Punggol Digital District as one of Singapore’s key long-term growth engines.

The district is designed to help Singapore:
✔ Create higher-paying digital jobs
✔ Strengthen fintech leadership
✔ Develop AI capabilities
✔ Attract global companies
✔ Train future tech talent
✔ Support the Smart Nation vision

In short, Punggol Digital District is not just another business park — it is Singapore’s attempt to build the next generation of its digital economy.

UOB opens its new $500m global technology and innovation centre in Punggol Digital District, driving digital banking capabilities across ASEAN. Read more at straitstimes.com. Read more at straitstimes.com.
