Remote job openings are growing incredibly over the course of the past year.

Pro Tip: When you are searching for remote roles on traditional jobs sites, don’t just limit your search to your current location. Also search for remote jobs in neighboring countries or timezones.

Many of our remote professionals have partial timezone overlap with their teams.

Some companies see this as a negative, whereas in reality this can be a positive.

Some of us have gotten used to spending 4+ hours per day on Zoom. It makes us feel productive to see our teammates on the other screen, and it becomes our default.

However, is this default productive or healthy?

Teams can actually be more productive when limiting meeting time, and working asynchronously. Here are some tips.

📖 ASYNCHRONOUS COMMS: CREATE DEFINITIONS & EXAMPLES:

Define what is asynchronous work for your team. This will include non-urgent suggestions, questions on non-critical tasks, requests for input in which you can wait up to 24 hours for a response. Create a list of sample communications for this and share with your team.

⚖️ ASYNCHRONOUS COMMS: BALANCING PROACTIVE & COHERENT COMMUNICATION

Encourage your team to be proactive in their communications so that items are brought up before they become urgent.
However, also encourage your team to think through their communication and make it clear. When they have multiple items that they are explaining over the course of a few hours, they can group these together and format them so that it is more easily readable for the rest of the team.

🚨 SYNCHRONOUS (URGENT) WORK CHANNEL:

Create an “Synchronous” channel in your workspace (Slack, MS Teams, etc). If something is urgent (major bug), put it in this channel and @ the person responsible. If it isn’t urgent, then put in other channel @‘ing the person, and they can check during their worktime. Make sure to limit the synchronous channel and to call out when items are added that aren’t urgent.

⏳ BUFFERS BETWEEN VIRTUAL MEETINGS:

Add 5 minute buffers between virtual meetings (e.g. all meetings start at 5 minutes past the half hour, and meetings can’t go beyond the half hour limit) This will help people take a quick break for coffee, bathroom break, to take notes and send quick follow up email/note after call, etc.

✅ DAILY GOALS (DAILY SCRUM) CHANNEL

Before the day, create a quick list of what you aim to accomplish and post to the group. Ask everyone to read the others to-dos, and to make any needed comments on these. This can save time aimlessly wandering before work, or inefficiently talking about to-dos during the day’s initial calls.

🗓 ASSIGN 1-2 DAYS IN THE WEEK FOR MEETINGS

Video call meetings can be important to align and prioritize tasks, brainstorm large goals, strategies and product roadmaps, etc.
Assign 1-2 days per week that you conduct these alignments in-depth.
Before these meetings, do some prep work to make sure that everyone is prepared and ready to use the time efficiently. After the meetings, use the buffer time, or the end of the day, to send follow-ups, to align on top priority items for the coming days, expected goals, etc.

🔑 Keys to Career Management in Uncertain Times

This is an uncertain time for all of us. We want to share a few keys to managing your career in uncertain times, according to Linda Spencer—director of career advising and programming at Harvard Extension School.

Here are a few of Spencer’s strategies for maintaining job search momentum and positioning yourself for success today and into the future.

⏳ Taking Time to Plan for a Change

Having extra time at home right now can be an opportunity to think strategically about what your ideal role might look like. It’s OK to take some time to pause, reassess your professional goals, and develop a plan for achieving them.
Ask yourself where you find job satisfaction. Brainstorm long-term career goals. What problems do you want to solve? List on-the-job activities you enjoy—and those you don’t. Identify your skills and talents, as well as areas where you’d like to make improvements…

🗣 Networking While Social Distancing

Networking remains one of the most important things you can do to position yourself for long-term career success. And the good news is that networking is still possible, even in this time of social distancing.
Virtual networking should focus on two things: building relationships and setting up informational meetings, sometimes called informational interviews.
Spencer notes that when thinking about how to network, remember that you have more contacts than you realize…

🌟 Leverage Your Online Profile

In today’s virtual world, social media is a critical tool in your networking toolbox. It’s a fun and easy way to make contact with your existing network. And you can leverage it to expand your network as well.
If you haven’t already, make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and complete.
However, leveraging social media to manage your career means more than just keeping an updated profile…

💪 Strengthening Your Resume Through Skill-Building

Another key to successful career management is ensuring that your education and skill set match your career goals.
It could be as simple as thinking creatively about how your existing skills might be leveraged in a different position or even a different industry.
However, depending on your career objectives, it may be necessary to update your knowledge base or even master new skills to be a competitive job seeker in a new industry…

How to Get your CV Noticed and Shortlisted - Advanced Tips for Senior Professionals

- Do you have a varied career that doesn’t fit into a box?
- Have you done various part-time consultancies?
- Do you have 10+ years experience?

If any of these apply to you, then you might not have an easily digestible CV that might confuse Hiring Managers.

Not to worry! We have created a few tips for you to refine your CV and get noticed!

Know Your Audience:
Hiring managers are frequently looking for particular profiles for their roles. They don’t want to spend a long time trying to figure out how you might have the potential to fit into the opening. They want to look at your CV, and quickly see that you are a good potential fit.

HOW DO YOU MAKE THEIR JOB EASY AND GET SHORTLISTED?

In the Job Posting, check out the role overview, as well as the requirements section.

1. Use a Tailored 2-Line Summary at the Top:
See a couple items that you nail with your experience? Then plug this into a Summary section at the top of your CV under your name?
If the role says that they are looking for a Marketing Graduate with “6+ years experience in Digital Marketing”, and you have this experience, then quickly plug this into your CV.
Note-Don’t use too long a summary, or else the reviewer is not likely to read it.

2. 2-4 Custom CVs:
Do you have a career that doesn’t fit exactly into a peg? Perhaps you have experience in Data Analysis, Program Management, and System Administration?
Create 2 to 4 custom CVs that emphasize each of your strengths. Are you applying for a Data Analyst Specialist Role? Then use your Data Analysis-oriented CV. Are you applying for Program Manager? Then use your Program Management-oriented CV.

3. Sometimes, Less is More:
Do you have a CV that is stuffed with loads of roles? This is particularly relevant for professionals with long careers, and/or consultants with several part-time projects. This could actually work against you - the client may see it and think you are “jumpy”, more likely to leave them after a short period of time.
If you have overlapping roles (perhaps you are a part-time consultant on multiple projects), consider moving one of your shorter, less relevant stints to an “Additional Projects” section.
Do you have multiple projects with the same organization? Put them into the same Job section.

4. Be smart with each Job Experience’s top bullet point:
Likely, a CV reviewer is not going to read more than the first sub-bullet in your CV.
If you have directly relevant experience to the role responsibilities, move this to the top bullet point in your CV.

Have any additional suggestions? Please provide any comments based on your learnings.

FREELANCE VS. FULL-TIME REMOTE JOBS - NOT AN EASY DECISION

How do you decide whether to work as a Freelancer or Full Timer?

GRASS IS GREENER?

Sometimes, you feel like the grass is greener on the other side.

If you are working on Freelance projects, you wish you had the stability of a day job, or perhaps you yearn for being able to be able to measure yourself through a promotion.

Or vice versa, perhaps you are worn down from going to the same office for multiple years. Or perhaps you've recently seen the super high billing rates that your company's consultant is paying.

CONSIDERATION FOR EACH (PROs and CONs)

Sometimes, the best way to think about something is to think about the positives of a choice, and to see which is more important to the things that matter to your: your happiness, your family, your career

FREELANCER

Pros:
1. Broad Experience in many environments
2. Benefits: More Work Flexibility
3. Higher Pay Per Hour
4. Building More relationships

5. Less corporate politicing
6. Job Flexibility

Cons:
1. Less Stability
2. Less direct work progression
3. Less steady mentorship
4. Less reliable benefits
5. Spending more time finding work
6. Overseeing less people

FULL TIME

Pros
1. More In-Depth Experience
2. Benefits: More consistent employer benefits, allowances...
3. Job and Earnings Security
4. Building Deeper Relationships
5. Easier to show progression on a CV/Resume

Cons
1. Spending more time in office politics
2. Not building client relationship skills as much
3. Not having as much variety from one month to the next
4. Can be less intellectual variety and stimulation
5. Depending on the role, you could be pigeonholed

HOW TO DECIDE?

Think about what is most important to you? And at what point are you in your life?

Are you ok with less certainty? Will you gain more happiness by having more variety but less certainty?

DIP YOUR TOE IN THE WATER

Have you tried the other one yet? if not, then dip your toe in the water and see what it is like!

If you are a full-time employee, perhaps you can take a bit of time off work (perhaps even a sabbatical?) and try a consulting project for a month or two, and see if you are drawn to this.

If you are a Freelancer for a long time, perhaps take a longer assignment, and invest some time spending more time at the employer office and getting to know the company’s colleagues. Are you getting more meaning and substance from knowing your colleagues and building these relationships? Or are you feeling strangled by the lack of change?

ASK YOUR FRIENDS WHO ARE ON THE OTHER SIDE

If you are a full time-employee, reach out to a couple consultants/freelancers and see what they have to say about it. See if you can subcontract off of them. Ask them how they built up their clientele.

Have other thoughts on this? Please provide and share!
