Hot take: the 3am servo pie is a security risk. 🥧
It's 4am. You've been on a static post since 10pm, and you were up at 7am yesterday. The CCTV screens haven't changed in an hour, and your eyes keep sliding shut for a second at a time.
Then the radio crackles. Someone's trying the back door.
Are you the guard who started this shift, or the 4am guard?
OK, it's not really about the pie. It's about what comes with it: short sleep, no plan, and a body clock working against you. Every guard who works nights has met the 4am guard. Slower. Shorter fuse. Fuzzier memory.
Body clocks make us sleepiest between 3am and 5am. Shift workers lose an average of 1 to 1.5 hours of sleep every 24 hours. And in a lab test, 17 hours awake impaired performance about as much as a 0.05% blood alcohol level, New Zealand's adult driving limit. Up at 7am and still on post at midnight? That's 17 hours.
That's why your own exhaustion belongs in your PCA. On hour eleven, the honest call is usually to keep eyes on from a safe distance, call it in and wait for backup. As NZ Police TENR guidance puts it, caution is not cowardice.
What actually helps:
âś… Main meal before work, then keep it light between midnight and 6am
âś… Pack food from home, so the servo isn't your only option at 3am
âś… Water first, and no caffeine in the 6 to 8 hours before bed
âś… A dark, cool, quiet room for day sleep, phone off
âś… Yawning on the drive home? Pull over, nap 15 to 20 minutes, then wait 10 before driving on
Our fatigue rule on Guard Select: at least 8 hours off before every shift, and no more than 60 hours in any 7 days.
We've turned all of this into Fatigue Management, a free Academy course: seven short modules, a final test, a badge and +1 on your Guard Select Score. It's the recovery half of the Physical Standard. The fitness test measures your engine. Fatigue Management keeps it running.
Capability isn't what you can do on your best day. It's what you can do at 4am, on the fourth night, and on the drive home.
