🎶🎛️ Practice makes perfect, right? Right??? 🎚️🎧
I was SO LOST trying to get my music production skills to where I wanted them, I felt like I was in a labyrinth…
I felt like I deserved much more progress than I was seeing. After all, I devoted just about every waking hour to honing my craft…
I'd made a conscious decision to put the music FIRST. I let my social life, my health, and everything else fall by the wayside…
I burned ALL other bridges. It wasn't pretty…
Still, I'd hear new records by other artists and I'd be totally perplexed at the qualities their music seemed to exude so effortlessly…
No matter how much time or effort I poured in, deep down I knew my work could never compare…
Sometimes the artists behind those records were younger than me. They'd been at it for less time than me. They weren't even better-equipped than me…
Naturally, the self-doubt kicked in. Was I just not intelligent enough? Did they have a mystical talent that I lacked? Was there an element of luck I'd overlooked?
There's no way they could have wanted it more than I did. I was running out of excuses…
However, retreat was never an option. When I say I burned all other bridges, I mean I burned ALL other bridges…
Even after 10,000+ hours on the job, I mean, I was competent… but I couldn't compete at the top…
In my case, at least, practise did NOT make perfect…
There was, however, a very distinct turning point. This was the most painful thing I've ever been through…
Yes, harder than heartbreak. Harder than addiction. Harder than bereavement. Sorry to get dark, but that's the raw reality…
I'd already imprisoned myself in pursuit of elite skills. The next step was to enslave myself…
I worked T-I-R-E-L-E-S-S-L-Y, testing every conceivable permutation of doing things (even some inconceivable ones)…
I had to throw out everything I "knew" to be true, and start afresh from first principles…
Soon it became clear why I'd felt as if I was in a labyrinth. It wasn't a labyrinth, it was actually a hall of mirrors…
SO MANY of the things "everybody knows" to be true in the field turned out to fall apart under scrutiny…
In many cases they're not only untrue, they're harmful. YET they're perpetuated by just about everyone…
I realised sometimes entire plugins are built around false premises. Not necessarily fatal, but certainly NOT optimal…
The part that hurt the most was the ultimate realisation: had I just been given the correct guidance in the first place, I wouldn't have had to struggle, suffer and sacrifice the way I did…
Imagine being told your life's pursuit (decades of excruciating work) had been barking up the wrong tree…
To this day, it still stings to think about how much faster I could've developed my skills…
I'm also annoyed at the vast wasted potential of scores of would-be great artists who never had the opportunity to contribute music the way they truly wanted, because they too were lost in the hall of mirrors…
Music is IMPORTANT, after all. Who can honestly say their life hasn't been made better by music? Music touches people, it lifts us up…
We need more/better music in the world. The barriers stopping you from doing that are a very BAD thing…
That's why when I finally started to get into the skill zone I'd lusted after for so long, I immediately knew I had to find a way to help others…
It's actually not simple. If I go against the grain and contradict conventional wisdom, in public, people complain and say I don't know what I'm talking about. I can't even get reach. Hilarious…
I'm not usually one to blow my own trumpet, but if they knew the rooms I've been in, and the professional accolades I've achieved, they might realise how silly their dismissal really is…
Anyway, that's irrelevant…
The next chapter in the story was me starting to provide one-on-one training. I found it extremely fulfilling to work closely with producers and witness them reinvent themselves…
That's great, of course, but I always wanted more impact…
I mean, I only ever had capacity for a handful of one-on-one trainees at any given time, and it wasn't necessarily affordable for the average person…
The next step was group coaching, which I started in 2023 with an aim to get similar results as I was seeing with the one-on-ones…
My proposal was simple: for a modest monthly subscription fee, I'll pull back the curtain and fill your requests as training videos that go in an archive…
In return, I simply asked for brutal feedback to help me refine the service to make sure everyone's moving forward and making great progress…
On the whole, it's been a smashing success. Incredible breakthroughs in unusually quick timeframes…
A few members left in the first year, but those holes were plugged the following year…
In 2025 I ran a short campaign to expand the group to 40 members, and the response was overwhelming. We filled up all spots and established a waiting list…
By the way, the majority of 2023 founding members are still with us today. Member transformations have been shocking, in some cases almost unbelievable…
People come in at different levels, some were basically beginners, others had many years of experience, some even had professional standing in the industry…
Some are youngsters, some retirement age, and everything between. Some are native English speakers, many aren't…
Most are interested in a range of genres, but we mainly focus on electronic genres like house, trance, techno, garage, jungle, and bass music (that sort of thing)…
Crucially, the principles we cover are genre-agnostic…
Big bass is big bass whether it's in a hip hop track or a hardstyle track; sweet treble is sweet treble whether it's in a pop song or a neurofunk banger; the very principles that make a mainstage track super loud also apply to an underground track…
And, for the most part, teaching these principles via the group, with the archive of training materials and exclusive production resources has been super effective…
To my surprise, it's typically been even more effective than the one-on-one training, even though it's a fraction of the cost…
Now we're coming to the end of the month (October 2026) and I'm expanding the group again…
For a chance to get in, all you have to do is book a quick call with me (this week) to explore your suitability. The new cohort starts 1 November…
The reason I do suitability calls is simply because I don't want the wrong people to join. As it's a cancel-anytime service with full refund in the first 30 days (if unsatisfied), that wouldn't benefit me…
On the call I'll show you behind the scenes, and answer your questions and concerns…
I'll also find out about you, your music, and your goals so we'll both know whether or not this group is right for you…
Time is running out, though. The gates close end of October and the fees go up for next year's intake…
So if you want people to hear a radical shift in your music… If you want to make continual progress… If you want a guide out of the hall of mirrors… If you want to make your best music… Book a call now! 👇
