Children born between April and August can legally defer starting school until the September after their fifth birthday.​

But confusion around the process means some families may not know about their options and experts say delaying school isn’t necessarily right for every child.​

Previous SEND experience is desirable, but not essential. Experience in youth work, care, mental health, sport or support work can also be valuable.​
