✨A new chapter begins at the Paris IAS! ✨

This week marks the beginning of the residency of the IAS Paris’s new 2026–2027 cohort.

Yesterday, our first fellows discovered the IAS’s premises, their offices and how the Institute operates — a first day dedicated to welcoming them and introducing them to their new research environment.

Today, it was the first time for scientific exchange. Each ten-month resident presented their research project to the other members of the cohort. This first opportunity to share their work offered a glimpse into the diversity of topics, disciplines and approaches represented within the new cohort.

We hope they will have a wonderful residency, with opportunities to meet and exchange with colleagues from France and across Europe, and to discover new perspectives and approaches that will enrich their research.

✨Un nouveau chapitre s’ouvre à l’IEA Paris ! ✨

Cette semaine marque le début de la résidence de la nouvelle promotion 2026–2027 de l’Institut d’études avancées de Paris.

Hier, nos premiers chercheurs en résidence ont découvert les locaux de l’IEA, leur bureau et le fonctionnement de l’Institut. Une première journée consacrée à leur accueil et à la découverte de leur nouvel environnement de recherche.

Aujourd’hui, place aux premiers échanges scientifiques. Chaque chercheur en résidence de dix mois a présenté son projet de recherche aux autres membres de la promotion. Ce premier temps de partage a permis de découvrir la diversité des sujets, des disciplines et des approches réunis au sein de cette nouvelle promotion.

Nous leur souhaitons une très belle résidence, riche en rencontres et en échanges avec leurs collègues français et européens, ainsi qu’en nouvelles perspectives et approches qui pourront enrichir leurs recherches.

Li Xiong joins the Paris IAS as part of the Distinguished Fellowship programme developed in collaboration with the cluster PostGenAI@Paris. Based in the heart of Paris, this interdisciplinary and cross-sector consortium aims to develop ethical, inclusive and sovereign AI that is fully anchored in the major challenges of our time.

🔹11:30 AM — Three Ways of Thinking AI Philosophically by Joseph Tanke, Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, specialist in 19th- and 20th-century European philosophy.

📣C’est la rentrée à l’IEA de Paris !

Dans quelques jours, l’Institut d'études avancées de Paris (IEA de Paris) accueillera ses premiers chercheurs de la promotion 2026–2027.

Nous aurons le plaisir d’accueillir 13 chercheurs, 8 en résidence pendant 10 mois et 5 autres pendant 1 mois : Will Bateman, Bram Büscher, Anthony Elliott AM, Carola Hein, Maurizio Isabella, emmanuel kreike, Guilherme Carlos Lassance dos Santos Abreu, Hannah Landecker, Guillaume Sauvé, Fredrik Stiernstedt, Joseph Tanke, Wing Thye Woo et Li Xiong.

Venus de différents pays et issus de disciplines variées des sciences humaines et sociales, ils rejoignent l'Institut pour développer leurs projets de recherche, échanger avec la communauté scientifique locale et nationale, et contribuer à enrichir la recherche grâce au dialogue interdisciplinaire et international.

Et ce n’est que le début !
➡️De nouveaux chercheurs rejoindront l’IEA chaque mois tout au long de l’année, enrichissant progressivement cette nouvelle promotion.

📣 Back to school at the Paris IAS!

In a few days’ time, the Paris Institute for Advanced Study will welcome its first fellows from the 2026–2027 cohort.

We are delighted to welcome 13 fellows, 8 of whom will be in residence for 10 months and 5 others for 1 month: Will Bateman, Bram Büscher, Anthony Elliott AM, Carola Hein, Maurizio Isabella, emmanuel kreike, Guilherme Carlos Lassance dos Santos Abreu, Hannah Landecker, Guillaume Sauvé, Fredrik Stiernstedt, Joseph Tanke, Wing Thye Woo et Li Xiong.

Coming from different countries and representing a wide range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences, they are joining us in the Institute to develop their research projects, engage with the local and national academic community, and contribute to enriching research through interdisciplinary and international dialogue.

And this is just the beginning!
➡️ New fellows will be joining the Paris IAS every month throughout the year, gradually enriching this new cohort.

Grâce au soutien de ses institutions membres et partenaires, l’Institut a poursuivi en 2025 son engagement en faveur de la recherche avancée en sciences humaines et sociales, tout en renforçant les liens entre chercheurs et société. Cette année a été particulièrement riche pour l’IEA de Paris, qui a accueilli des chercheurs internationaux de haut niveau, développé de nouveaux programmes et consolidé ses collaborations intersectorielles et internationales.

🔹Le lancement d'un groupe de travail "Formation continue", avec les partenaires de l’Institut qui vient s'ajouter au groupe de travail "Intelligence artificielle" lancé en 2024
🔹Une nouvelle étape pour le The Socioscope avec 700 études de cas documentés dans 35 pays

📢The Constructive Advanced Thinking (CAT) Programme supports small interdisciplinary teams of 3 to 5 early-career researchers through a series of short, fully funded research stays at Institutes for Advanced Study across Europe and beyond.

🤝Rather than a traditional research grant, CAT offers the time, space and collaborative setting to explore new research directions, experiment with innovative approaches and build lasting international collaborations.

Zoom sur l’un des temps forts qui a marqué l’année à l’IEA de Paris !

🌍 Cette année, le cycle de conférences de l’Institut, organisé par Bettina Laville, présidente de l’IEA de Paris, conseillère d’Etat honoraire et co-fondatrice et présidente d’honneur du Comité 21 intitulé « Ruptures. Vivons-nous une époque de ruptures, et lesquelles ? », s’est intéressé aux profondes transformations qui traversent nos sociétés contemporaines.

Partant du constat que les notions de rupture et de transition occupent désormais une place centrale dans le débat public, il a réuni chercheurs et experts autour de quatre conférences explorant les dimensions philosophiques, géopolitiques, anthropologiques, éthiques et technologiques de ces mutations. Ces échanges ont permis d’éclairer les changements à l’œuvre et d’interroger la manière dont ils redéfinissent nos repères, nos institutions et notre rapport au monde. Nous remercions chaleureusement l’ensemble des intervenants pour la richesse de leurs contributions dans le cadre de ce cycle annuel.

A closer look at one of the highlights of the year at the Paris IAS!

🌍 This year, the Institute's conference series – organised by Bettina Laville, President of the Paris IAS, Honorary Member of the Council of State, and co-founder and Honorary President of Comité 21 – was entitled "Ruptures. Vivons-nous une époque de ruptures, et lesquelles ?" (Ruptures: Are we living in an era of ruptures, and if so, which ones?), and focused on the profound transformations taking place in our contemporary societies.

Building on the observation that the concepts of rupture and transition now occupy a central place in public debate, the series brought together researchers and experts for four conferences exploring the philosophical, geopolitical, anthropological, ethical and technological dimensions of these changes. These discussions shed light on the changes underway and examined how they are redefining our points of reference, our institutions and our relationship with the world. We would like to extend our warmest thanks to all the speakers for their valuable contributions to this annual series.
