Poll Results: A Great Manager Is Worth More Than a Paycheque? 👥💼

If you could guarantee just one thing in your next job, what would you choose?

For the largest share of our respondents, the answer wasn't compensation.

37% chose a great manager, putting leadership ahead of great pay at 29%. Flexibility followed at 20%, while 14% prioritized great coworkers.

What's particularly interesting is how evenly the votes were distributed. There wasn't one benefit that everyone agreed mattered most—and that may be the bigger takeaway.

A competitive salary can get someone's attention, but the person they report to can shape what happens after they accept the offer. A strong manager can influence development, recognition, communication, workload and ultimately whether someone sees a future with the organization.

At the same time, nearly two-thirds of respondents chose something other than their manager, reminding us that there isn't a universal formula for creating a great employee experience.

Perhaps that's the challenge for employers: you can't compensate for poor leadership with flexibility, replace meaningful relationships with higher pay, or assume every employee is motivated by the same thing.

If you could guarantee two of these four instead of one, which combination would you choose? 👇

Salary Growth Holds Steady for 2027 💰📊

Canadian employers appear to be taking a measured approach to compensation planning as economic uncertainty continues to influence workforce decisions.

According to new Mercer Canada data reported by Canadian HR Reporter, employers are budgeting an average 3.0% merit increase and 3.2% total salary increase for 2027. These projections remain largely in line with actual increases delivered in 2025 and 2026, suggesting salary budgets are holding relatively steady for a third consecutive year.

However, the national average doesn't tell the whole story. Compensation plans vary across industries, with High Tech projecting total increases of 3.6%, while Banking and Financial Services sits below the national average at 3.0%. Economic conditions remain a significant consideration, with 60% of surveyed organizations expecting the economy to have at least a moderate impact on compensation decisions in 2027.

Employers are also looking beyond the traditional annual raise. Half of Canadian organizations have provided or plan to provide off-cycle salary adjustments in 2026, with a similar pattern expected next year. Meanwhile, promotion activity is projected to slow, with employers expecting to promote approximately 6.4% of their workforce in 2027, down from 7.6% in 2026.

Technology is becoming another part of the compensation conversation. 57% of organizations report some level of automation within their compensation processes, particularly for salary planning, market benchmarking, and job matching. However, advanced adoption remains limited, with data quality, system integration, and internal resources cited as key barriers.

As organizations begin finalizing their 2027 plans, the findings point to a compensation landscape characterized by steady salary growth, greater sector variation, and an evolving mix of compensation tools and technology.

Your First 30 Days Should Include Observation, Not Just Action Warning

Starting a new job often creates pressure to prove your value immediately. However, one of the most useful things a new employee can do during their first few weeks is understand the organization before trying to change it.

Every workplace has unwritten processes, historical context, stakeholder relationships, and reasons why certain decisions are made. Taking time to understand those dynamics can help you distinguish between something that genuinely needs improvement and something that simply works differently from your previous organization.

For employers, effective onboarding should create room for this learning period. New employees need context, relationships, and clarity before they can reasonably be expected to operate at full capacity.

Making an impact matters, but understanding where you're making that impact matters just as much.

✨ This week's takeaway: Your first contribution to a new organization doesn't always need to be a solution. Sometimes, it should be a question.

What do you wish you had learned sooner when starting your last role?

⚖️📈 Legal Leadership Is Becoming a Competitive Advantage 📈⚖️

As private capital firms navigate a more selective and operationally demanding market, legal leadership is evolving from a traditional compliance function into a strategic driver of business performance.

According to recent insights from Odgers, organizations are placing greater emphasis on legal leaders who can support value creation, manage transformation initiatives, navigate complex governance requirements, and contribute to commercial decision-making throughout the investment lifecycle—not just during acquisitions and exits.

The research suggests that today's most effective legal executives combine technical expertise with strong commercial acumen, adaptability, and the ability to partner across the business. As holding periods lengthen and operational complexity increases, organizations are prioritizing leaders who can help execute strategy, mitigate risk, and accelerate long-term growth.

For employers, this reflects a broader shift across executive hiring: leadership decisions are increasingly being viewed as investment decisions, with the right talent playing a direct role in driving organizational performance and shareholder value.

💡

One of the most overlooked drivers of employee engagement is timely, meaningful feedback.

Waiting until a quarterly or annual review to recognize great work—or address challenges—can slow development and create uncertainty. Employees perform best when they understand what's working, where they can improve, and how their contributions support broader organizational goals.

Likewise, employees shouldn't wait to receive feedback. Seeking input regularly demonstrates initiative, encourages continuous learning, and helps build stronger relationships with managers and colleagues.

When feedback becomes part of everyday conversations instead of scheduled events, development becomes continuous rather than reactive.

✨ This week's takeaway: Growth happens through ongoing conversations, not annual evaluations.

How often do you think meaningful feedback should be part of the workplace?

Poll Results: What Gets the First Resume Refresh? 📄✨

When a new opportunity catches your eye, where does the resume editing begin?

Our latest poll showed there’s no universal approach — but work experience narrowly took the lead.

💼 36% update their work experience first
📝 30% start with their professional summary
👀 20% say they rarely change their resume
🛠️ 15% focus first on their skills section

What caught our attention is that 66% of respondents start by changing either their experience or professional summary — two areas that give candidates the greatest opportunity to tell a more targeted career story.

Rather than simply adding more information, tailoring a resume can be about deciding which information deserves the spotlight. The experience most relevant to one opportunity may not be what matters most for another.

And then there’s the 20% who rarely make changes at all. Is a strong, well-written resume versatile enough to work across applications, or should every application receive its own tailored version?

We’re curious where recruiters, hiring managers, and job seekers land on this one. Leave your thoughts in the comments below!👇

🌱🤖 Gen Z Is Redefining Career Growth 🤖🌱

The traditional career ladder is evolving, and Gen Z is leading the shift.

New research from International Workplace Group (IWG) reveals that younger professionals are increasingly embracing portfolio careers—building multiple income streams through side hustles, freelance work, and entrepreneurial ventures while continuing to grow in their primary roles.

According to the study, 61% of Gen Z professionals believe AI will reshape their careers, prompting many to proactively develop new skills, diversify their experience, and increase their earning potential. At the same time, 31% already have—or are considering—a side hustle, with nearly half citing financial security as their primary motivation.

Career mobility is also becoming more intentional. Rather than following a traditional linear path, many Gen Z professionals are strategically moving between roles, industries, and projects to expand their skills and stay competitive in a rapidly changing labour market. Flexible and hybrid work models are supporting this shift by reducing commute times and creating more opportunities for learning, collaboration, and additional income streams.

As technology continues to reshape the workplace, adaptability, continuous learning, and entrepreneurial thinking are becoming key drivers of long-term career success.
