It turns out the old saying isn’t quite right, an old dog really can learn new tricks.

After almost 20 years away from formal study, I made the decision in 2025 to step back into university life and commence a Graduate Certificate in Applied Coaching. Yesterday, I received confirmation that I have officially graduated and that the qualification has been conferred.

It was a moment that made me smile, but also one that gave me reason to pause. Returning to study at this stage of my career was not just about adding another qualification. It was about staying curious, stretching myself, and continuing to grow in a field that has shaped so much of my professional life.

A few years ago back in my corporate life, I heard a phrase used in a senior management setting that stayed with me: “pale, stale males.” At the time, it felt dismissive, particularly after spending much of my career supporting and encouraging women into leadership roles and learning from many outstanding female leaders along the way. Over time, I have come to see that moments like that can either make you smaller, or they can remind you to keep developing, contributing and challenging assumptions, including assumptions about age, gender and relevance.

So, in the interest of not becoming stale 🙂, I am proud to have added another postgraduate qualification to the collection. More importantly, I am grateful for the reminder that learning does not have an expiry date.

If anything, this experience has reignited the appetite for more, and perhaps the next round of study may not be too far away.

Active HR is looking for a Casual Industrial & Employee Relations Consultant to work directly with our HR Business Partners and clients. You'll give the specialist advice that helps businesses get the Fair Work system right, across the many industry awards our clients operate under.

What you'll do:
✅ Review real employment scenarios against Fair Work and award conditions, then give clear, practical advice
✅ Support clients through wage compliance reviews and help them head off wage theft claims before they start
✅ Work alongside our HR Business Partners to help turn complex IR into advice clients can act on
✅ Working the Active HR team ensuring our systems and solutions remain Fair Work compliant and up to date with workplace relations changes.

Here you'll help right wrongs for employees at companies that aren't our clients, so people who've been treated unfairly have someone in their corner when the award hasn't been followed. It's rare to see both sides of workplace relations in one role. In this role you'll help businesses get it right and help workers when a business gets it wrong.

You'll bring:

🟪 What is a "Purple Patch"?

Most days we absolutely love the work we do. This is one of those days.

Today during a regular client check-in I received thanks from an employer who we have been working with for just over 12 months. A medium sized employer in the early education industry.

When asked about todays conversation they described their position as a "Purple Patch", a term I have never heard before. When I enquired what it means, they explained....they're in a great space within their business and with their team. The right people are in the business, engagement is up, retention is up, they have got a pool of resumes of qualified workers knocking on the door wanting to join....its a great space to be in.

The client then proceeded to thank us for being in their corner......their words were: "When I think of something my emotions want me to do I get this thought bubble I have my what would Rhett say here moment. I have learnt so much. working with you guys"

Very humbling words to hear.
