๐ŸŽ‰ Weโ€™re a finalist! Age Friendly Arts Program recognised

Port Augusta City Council is proud to be named a finalist in the 2026 Minister for Health and Wellbeing โ€“ Excellence in Public Health Awards for our Age Friendly Arts Program, held at Yarta Purtli Art Gallery.

The program celebrates the positive impact of arts and creativity in supporting the health, wellbeing and social connection of older members of our community.

Council CEO John Banks said โ€œArt has a wonderful way of bringing people together, encouraging self-expression and creating a sense of belonging. Our Age Friendly Arts Program provides meaningful opportunities for older residents to connect with others and enjoy the benefits of creativity,โ€ Mr Banks said.

โ€œIโ€™d like to acknowledge Councilโ€™s Arts Officer Christie Mitchell in delivering this program. And thank the dedicated participants for being part of this acknowledged program. Being recognised as a finalist at a state level is a fantastic achievement and reflects Councilโ€™s commitment to supporting an inclusive and connected community.โ€

We would also like to thank Potentia Energy for backing a program that makes a real difference for our local community

The winners and highly commended councils will be announced at the awards ceremony on 4 December 2026 at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

๐ŸŽจ A little piece of Port Augustaโ€™s history, brought to life!

Two beautiful new murals have officially been honored at the Loudon Road amenities in Port Augusta West, celebrating our cityโ€™s rich maritime history.

Mayor Linley Shine joined artist Althea Mallee and Council representatives for the unveiling of the murals, which were created following a community vote on Altheaโ€™s designs.

The murals, titled Age of Sail and Age of Steam, are based on real historical black and white photographs discovered by Althea during her research at the State Library of South Australia.

โ›ต Age of Sail features the Lurline, which sailed into Port Augusta in 1899 carrying stores and general cargo, alongside the wreck posts of the Old Jeny, which can still be seen along our foreshore today.

๐Ÿšข Age of Steam features the SS Investigator, which played an important role in Port Augustaโ€™s coastal trade from the 1880s until 1916. Following a refit in 1903, around 250 townspeople joined a celebratory outing aboard the vessel!

Following community feedback, Althea also incorporated a white ibis, the Flinders Ranges and the Great Western Bridge, bringing together our maritime past and the landscape we know and love today.

A big thank you to Althea for bringing these wonderful pieces of local history to life, and to everyone who took part in the community vote and helped shape the final designs.

It's wonderful to see our local history celebrated in such a creative way!

๐Ÿ’ง HAVE YOUR SAY: Northern Water Project Environmental Impact Statement

The South Australian Government is seeking community feedback on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed Northern Water project.

The project aims to provide a secure, climate-resilient water supply for industry across the Upper Spencer Gulf and Far North.

The proposal includes:
๐Ÿ”น A large-scale seawater desalination plant at Mullaquana Station, about 25km south of Whyalla.
๐Ÿ”น A pipeline system extending approximately 360km north to Olympic Dam, with a 46km branch line to Carrapateena Mine.
๐Ÿ”น Supporting infrastructure, including electricity transmission lines, substations and telecommunications.

The EIS examines the potential environmental, social and economic impacts of the project.

Your feedback matters. Community views will help inform the assessment and decision-making process.

๐Ÿ”‹ YOUR SAY | Proposed Community Battery for Port Augusta

Have your say on a proposed community battery for Port Augusta West!

Port Augusta City Council, in partnership with the Government of South Australia, is seeking community feedback on a proposal to install a 700kW community battery on a Council reserve near the SAPN electricity substation on Bryant Street/Ellis Close.

The battery would store surplus renewable energy and release it during peak demand periods, at night, or when the electricity grid needs additional support.

The project forms part of the emPowering SA program and Virtual Power Plant network, which aims to help eligible households access more affordable electricity and support a more stable and resilient electricity grid.

๐Ÿ“… Consultation closes Monday 23 November 2026.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Have your say and share your feedback on the proposal!
