African Regional Intellectual Property Organization - ARIPO

African Regional Intellectual Property Organization - ARIPO ARIPO was mainly established to pool together the resources of its Member States for the promotion, development and harmonization of IP laws and policies.

ARIPO is an inter-governmental Organization that grants and administers Intellectual Property (IP) titles on behalf of its Member States and provides IP information to its clientele in search services, publications, and awareness creation. The objectives of ARIPO include the integration of IP in development programmes and policies, administration of IP (registration, exploitation, and enforcement)

, undertaking IP awareness initiatives, promoting capacity building and development of human resources in IP, and facilitating the dissemination of technological information and transfer of technology. ARIPO currently administers five (5) Protocols on behalf of its Member States: the Harare Protocol for the protection of patents and industrial designs, the Banjul Protocol on marks, the Swakopmund Protocol for the protection of Traditional Knowledge and Expressions of Folklore, the Arusha Protocol for the protection of new varieties of plants, and the Kampala Protocol on voluntary registration of copyright and related rights.

ARIPO held the 4th Regional School Clubs Awards Ceremony in Harare on 29 May 2026, celebrating young creatives and innovators from Ghana, The Gambia, Liberia, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia.

Maranatha School from Liberia was the overall winner, followed by David Kaunda National STEM Secondary School from Zambia as first runner-up and Saint Thereseโ€™s Upper Basic School from The Gambia as second runner-up.

Through the IP School Club Project, ARIPO continues to nurture creativity, innovation and respect for intellectual property among Africaโ€™s next generation of creators and entrepreneurs.

The ceremony was jointly organised by ARIPO and
World Intellectual Property Organization with support from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea.

ARIPO, in collaboration with the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho through the Registrar Generalโ€™s Office, the Ministry of Law and Constitutional Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, is hosting the Symposium on the Protection of New Varieties of Plants from 20โ€“21 May 2026 in Maseru, Lesotho.

Held under the theme โ€œNurturing Agricultural Innovation: Advancing the Protection of New Plant Varieties for Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture in Africa,โ€ the Symposium seeks to raise awareness on the role of (PVP) in supporting agricultural development across the ARIPO Region and beyond.

The event brings together policymakers, legal and IP experts, plant breeders, seed companies, farmers and other key stakeholders to discuss the ratification and implementation of the Arusha Protocol, its alignment with national laws, and its relationship with the UPOV Convention. It also provides a platform for sharing experiences and developing practical recommendations to strengthen PVP systems in Africa.
