Here follows Dr Andrea van Zyl's testimonial, who started her career through us as ship's doctor in January 2019:

"Not many 30-year-olds can say that they have seen all seven continents. In just over a year, cruise ship work took me to the five continents I had not yet lived on or visited. You will see places most people cannot begin to dream of seeing in their lifetime: from Antarctica, to remote little tropical islands. While you will be expected to work every day, you will have a good amount of free time to explore the ports. I have found the working hours to be very manageable, since the fixed clinic hours each day are short. The after-hours work can be very variable, but there are many days that we only work a handful of hours and just relax the rest. It is incredibly enriching working with medical colleagues from a wide variety of countries, and many of them have become my close friends. Ship life is a life of luxury: sit down to great food at every meal, daily cabin cleaning service, on board entertainment, etc. In general, your spouse can travel with you, and close family can also visit and cruise with you without charge. The salary beats that of any regular job, even when taking into account the new South African tax laws. If you are wondering if you should try out ship medicine, just go for it! The money and quality of life is great, and you get to see the world."

Here follows Dr Alexander Roux's testimonial, who started his career at sea in January 2019:

'My words are laid out here to aid you in your decision whether or not your desire to practice medicine at sea should pass as a ship in the night...or be steered towards ultimately becoming an experienced maritime physician/nurse/paramedic.

Please find a skillfully crafted pro/con list below:

Pro's:
- Broadening your medical horisons, learning that great standards of care is the same across the world
- Working with and learning from team members from all over the world (or coincidentally from your home town)
- Gaining experience from all specialities of medicine including Emergency Care (oh, we have loads of great cases: trauma and medical), Family Medicine (One invariably develops a strong passion for managing the crew), Public Health and the odd Endocrinology case.
- All the luxuries and learning associated with travelling across the world with colleagues that become friends, including food, laughs and endless fun on your shore-leave hours.
- Mandrid and the team at Cruise Line Medical Recruitment guide your in every single step of the way until you join your vessel.

Con's:
- Requires a mental leap of faith, leaving one's comfort zone (isn't this the state where we learn the most?)
- Requires a fair bit of courage (courage is always rewarded!)
- Is this list even a con list?

I hope this list has been helpful.
To paraphrase my colleague and fellow sailor Dr Michal Muller:
If you need to consider it, then you have to do it.

Dr Willem Nel is sharing his experience as a ship's doctor:

“I have worked for 23 years as a general practitioner in South Africa and have thoroughly enjoyed it, but at the age of 53 I decided that I needed a new challenge and a change in the daily routine of my work. Through ‘Cruise Line Medical Recruitment’ I started my new career at sea in 2016 on the Oosterdam ship of Holland America Lines. Yes, it was a challenge and a steep learning curve as you are introduced to new medical challenges, people and places, but the medical centres on the cruise liners are well equipped with up-to-date equipment and medicine. I am enjoying working in the team set-up in the medical centre on board and you quickly become a family as you work together.
One of the best advantages that the company offers is that your wife/partner can travel with you and that you can share all your experiences with him/her. We’ve been married for 27 years and it is a privilege to share this experience with my wife. It is exciting to wake up every morning in a different port. Since I’ve started in 2016, I have visited 60 countries all over the world, have seen and experienced different cultures, seen amazing places, met many interesting people and have broadened my mind set.
I can recommend a life at sea to anybody who is looking to enrich their lives, earn money while you see the world and possibly share it with the one you love”

"As a ship's doctor, I was able to experience life at sea, meet some amazing people, and gain very good medical experience - managing patients with a wide range of medical conditions, and experiencing the medevac of a patient via helicopter while at sea.

I was also able to visit some fantastic & beautiful sites in my free time. During my first contract, we visited Mexico, Hawaii and San Francisco. During my second contract, I was able to see parts of the British Isles and France, which I would otherwise not have visited in my lifetime. Life at sea has been an exciting an enriching experience."

'If I could put into words my experience aboard the cruise ships, I would use these words - Opportunity, Diversity, Travel and Skill set.

Opportunity - Chance for me to work abroad and experience different aspects of medicine.

Diversity - Getting to interact with different cultures around the world in a work and social environment that has enriched my life.

Travel - Once in a lifetime experience to see the world in an unique, very safe and inexpensive way of travel.

Skill set - Has definitely enhanced my existing skills and also acquired new skills in managing patients in this unique setting.

I would encourage anyone else considering this career option, as this was one of my best experiences thus far.'

'When asked to summarise the last 18 months into a short paragraph I quickly realised that this was an impossible task. How do I summarise what it is like to practice evidence based medicine in a first world setting, supported by an international team of nurses and paramedics, while at the same time travelling the world and exploring new cultures? Oh wait I just did – I guess that wasn’t that hard, then.

Practicing clinical medicine on a cruise ship is a unique challenge and encompasses elements of emergency & general practice, as well as public and occupational health. But that’s not all – the administrative and managerial experience is invaluable and the exposure to the functioning of health systems worldwide has truly enriched my understanding of global health.

Maritime medicine allows me to do the two things that I love the most – travel and medicine. I could never have imagined that my work day could begin with caring for a critically ill patient and end on a beach in Hawaii, a mountain in Norway or a street in Venice. All in a day’s work for a cruise ship doctor.'

'Maritime medicine is exciting and challenging at the same time. There is nothing else like it. If you are contemplating if you should try it out or not, then you should definitely try it out! The Holland America Group provides Evidence Based Medicine in a world class environment. You visit the most amazing places on earth, befriend the coolest people from all over the world, while doing what you love. I will recommend maritime medicine with this cruise line company to everyone!

Dr Minette Geldenhuys is sharing her experience as ship's doctor with us:

'Working on ships has definitely been a life-changing experience for me. It taught me so much about myself - both professionally and personally. I experienced and learnt about cultures and people from all over the world, both through working with them and by visiting many different countries - more than 20 in the past 2 years! The feeling of waking up every morning with a porthole view of a new undiscovered place is something you can never get enough of.

The clinical experience I've gained as a doctor has been immense. I have always had the privilege of working with knowledgeable and experienced senior doctors from which I could learn and expand my skills. It's true that it can become quite busy from time to time, but that's nothing that a few hours hiking in Norway, lying on a beach in the Bahamas or scuba diving the Great Barrier reef can't make up for!'

This journey, together with sharing it with colleagues and loved ones, will most definitely be a lifelong memory and major influence in my career as a medical practitioner."

Testimonial by Dr Sumaya Guffar

'I’ve been working as a doctor on board cruise ships for about 18 months now – and though the initial decision to begin working on a ship was a difficult one, I have had no regrets since! It’s been an amazing experience all around: working with the latest and updated medical training and equipment; making friends from all over the world, and of course, getting to travel to amazing destinations! There is definitely no shortage in medical experience with Emergency Medicine and General Practice, being the main disciplines of focus during my work day. From waking up to the open ocean every morning, to the warm and friendly atmosphere on board, I can definitely say this is a must-try experience for all keen doctors.'
