AI Is a Tool, Not the Recruiter

After last week’s post about companies trusting AI with recruitment and selection, a few obvious questions came up, the biggest being: “Are we against AI in recruitment?”

The answer is not at all. AI can be incredibly valuable when it supports the recruitment process rather than replacing human judgment.

Here are some of the key ways AI can benefit recruiters:
1. Faster Talent Sourcing
AI can scan large talent pools across platforms like LinkedIn, job portals and internal databases far quicker than a human can. This helps surface potential candidates that recruiters can then properly assess and engage with.
2. Reducing Administrative Work
AI can assist with repetitive tasks such as scheduling interviews, sending reminders, coordinating calendars and managing follow-ups. This frees up recruiters to focus on higher-value work.
3. More Time for Candidate Engagement
With less time spent on admin, recruiters can dedicate more time to sourcing, speaking to candidates, building relationships and advising clients.
4. Market Insights and Data
AI can help analyse salary benchmarks, hiring trends and talent availability, giving recruiters and hiring managers better visibility of the market.
5. Managing high volumes of applications
AI can help organise and structure large numbers of CVs, making it easier for recruiters to review applications efficiently and focus on the most relevant candidates.

At the end of the day, recruitment is still about people. AI is a powerful tool, but the best results happen when technology works alongside human experience, judgment and insight. Not instead of it.

Because placing the right person in the right role isn’t just about data or keywords. It’s about understanding a person’s career, their potential, their personality and how they’ll fit into a team or business.

And that’s something a good recruiter still does best.

Would you trust a Robot with your recruitment and selection?

Recently we watched a clip of Trevor Noah speaking about AI and how quickly the world is automating decisions that used to require human judgment. It was funny, as Trevor always is, but it was also a little uncomfortable because in recruitment, we’re starting to see exactly what he was talking about (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O01k6Du543o).

Across South Africa, more organisations are implementing AI-driven screening systems to filter CVs before a human ever sees them. On paper, it sounds efficient, faster, smarter, less bias, but here’s the reality we’re seeing:
Qualified professionals are being automatically rejected, roles remain open for months, and hiring managers are still waiting for critical appointments, often because the CVs never reach a human decision-maker.

We were recently asked to submit candidates for several urgent roles and every CV had to go through an automated screening platform. Strong, relevant, experienced finance professionals were all rejected. Not one progressed. Meanwhile, the business continued operating without the key finance capacity it urgently needed.
After consulting with the company, we managed to convince the client to interview some of the candidates. AI was proved wrong and we successfully placed the roles.

AI is powerful, and it absolutely has a place. But recruitment isn’t just pattern matching. It’s context. It’s understanding career progression and subtle differences. It’s recognising transferable skills. It’s knowing when a candidate might not tick every box on paper but is exactly what the business needs. Most importantly, it’s human beings making decisions about other human beings.

In South Africa especially, where access to opportunity and economic inclusion matter deeply, we should be careful about allowing algorithms to become the first and final gatekeepers. Technology should support recruiters and hiring managers; not replace clear thinking and sound judgment. Because sometimes the best candidate doesn’t fit perfectly into a machine’s checklist. And sometimes, without real judgment behind it, what might seem more “efficient” can quickly turn into frustratingly slow.

Want recruiters to find you? Start by making your CV easy to search.

Recruiters don’t just wait for applications. We actively search for talent every single day on LinkedIn and job portals like Executive Placements, Pnet, CareerJunction.

And here is the honest truth: Many strong candidates get overlooked simply because their profiles are incomplete, outdated, or too summarised.

If we can’t clearly see:
• Your location
• The companies you’ve worked for
• Your current role and what you’re responsible for
• The positions/titles you’re targeting
• Your current and expected CTC range
• The industries you’ve worked in
• Key systems, achievements, and scope of experience

…it becomes difficult to confidently match you to the right opportunity.

A one-page summarised CV isn’t powerful if it leaves out important information. Being detailed is never “too much”.

Similarly, a vague LinkedIn profile doesn’t create mystery, it creates uncertainty.

Your CV and LinkedIn profile is your personal marketing tools. Your brand.

If the information isn’t there, you may never even know how many opportunities you missed.

Keep it accurate.
Keep it clear.
Make it easy to find you.
