Top Tip Tuesday for explaining gaps in your employment history.
1. Be upfront about the gap.
Don’t try to hide periods of unemployment by changing dates or leaving unexplained gaps in your CV. Being transparent builds trust with recruiters.
2. Keep your explanation brief and honest.
You don’t need to share your entire personal story. A simple explanation of why you weren’t working is usually enough.
3. Explain what you were doing during that time.
Whether you were studying, raising children, caring for a family member, travelling, freelancing or actively looking for work, provide context where appropriate.
4. If you were retrenched, say so.
Retrenchment is not a reflection of your ability or performance. If this is why you left your previous role, explain the circumstances confidently and professionally.
5. If you’ve been job hunting for a while, be prepared to explain.
You don’t need to apologise for being unemployed. Explain that you’ve been searching for the right opportunity and highlight any relevant steps you’ve taken to stay up to date with your industry.
6. Highlight any skills you gained during your time away.
Perhaps you completed a course, managed a household budget, volunteered, freelanced or developed new skills. If relevant, mention these to demonstrate that your abilities remain valuable.
7. Don’t overshare personal circumstances.
If you took time off for health, family or other personal reasons, you can maintain your privacy. A simple statement such as, “I took time away for personal reasons, which have since been resolved,” may be sufficient if accurate.
8. Show that you’re ready for your next opportunity.
If you’ve been out of the workforce for some time, reassure the recruiter that you’re ready to return and explain why you’re interested in the role.
9. Be consistent with your dates.
Make sure the dates on your CV, LinkedIn profile and application forms align. If there are discrepancies, be prepared to clarify them.
An explanation in your cover letter / application email also goes a long way if you are currently unemployed.
