FOOD FOR THOUGHT !!!

CABBAGE FERTILISATION

Applying the right fertilizers to cabbages during their growing stages is crucial for optimal growth and yield. Here's a general guideline on fertilizing cabbages:

1. Pre-Planting Stage:
Soil Preparation: Before planting, test the soil to determine its nutrient levels and pH. Cabbages prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8.
Organic Matter: Incorporate well-rotted compost or manure into the soil to improve its structure and fertility.
Base Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10 (N-P-K), at a rate of 1 to 2 pounds per 100 square feet. This provides the essential nutrients for early growth.
2. Seedling Stage:
Starter Solution: When transplanting seedlings, use a starter fertilizer solution with a higher phosphorus content, like 5-10-5, to promote root development. Mix according to the manufacturer's instructions.
3. Early Growth Stage (4-6 weeks after planting):
Nitrogen Boost: Cabbages are heavy feeders and require more nitrogen for leafy growth. Side-dress with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer, such as ammonium nitrate or urea, at a rate of 1 pound per 100 feet of row. Apply it about 6 inches away from the plants and lightly incorporate it into the soil.
4. Mid-Growth Stage (8-10 weeks after planting):
Balanced Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer again, like 10-10-10, to ensure the plants continue receiving a steady supply of nutrients. Use about 1 pound per 100 square feet.
5. Late Growth Stage (heading stage):
Potassium and Phosphorus: Increase potassium and phosphorus to support head formation and quality. Use a fertilizer with a higher potassium content, such as 5-10-10, at a rate of 1 pound per 100 square feet.
Tips for Fertilizing Cabbages:
Watering: Ensure consistent moisture levels, especially after fertilizing, to help nutrients reach the plant roots.
Mulching: Mulch around the plants to conserve moisture, reduce weeds, and maintain soil temperature.
Avoid Over-Fertilization
