These stairs in Montmartre were built in the late 19th century, when Paris was adding stairways to make its steep northern hills easier to cross on foot.

At the time, Montmartre was not a tourist area. It was a dense, working-class neighborhood with workshops, small apartments, and limited street access. Staircases like this one were practical infrastructure, not decoration. They allowed faster movement between streets that sit at very different heights, especially before modern transport reached the hill.

The photo on the left dates from around 1900. It comes from a period when Montmartre was still partly outside the city’s modern layout and had a more rural, improvised feel. Many staircases in the area were added between 1880 and 1910, as Paris expanded north.
