Eating ice cream is just like a job interview. Hear me out…

Job interviews and ice cream have more in common than you’d think:

Deciding where to go
▪️ Just like choosing an ice cream shop, choosing where to apply takes strategy. Are you going for the big brand, the boutique spot, or the one that’s close to home? Same with companies—you don’t apply everywhere.
▪️ You do your research.

Flavour
▪️ Are you classic vanilla (solid and dependable)? Bold pistachio (unique and memorable)? Or rocky road (okay, you’re fun and full of surprises)?
▪️ The flavour you choose is like your personal brand in an interview—own it, and make sure it fits what they’re looking for.
▪️ You also decide how to package your ice cream in a cone, cup or tub. The way you tell your story in an interview is the same, you decide the how.

Adding toppings (a.k.a. your extras)
▪️ The sprinkles, the fudge, the crushed Oreos. These are your skills, experiences, and personality traits that add that extra something.
▪️ Toppings don’t work without a solid base, though. Know your strengths first, then bring the toppings. Relate it to the role and plan the best examples to share.

Brain Freeze
▪️ You prepped hard, showed up sharp, nailed most of it…then you got a rejection. Bang - Brain. Freeze. It hurts, but it’s temporary.
▪️ Breathe, recover, reflect. And remember: even the most experienced ice cream lovers get caught off guard.

Moral of the story?
The interview process, like eating ice cream, should be approached with intention, flavour, and a sense of humour. Not every scoop will be your favourite—but every one teaches you something.

Keep showing up. Keep refining. And most importantly, enjoy the process. 🍨

Struggling to nail an interview?

Interviewing is up there with some of the most stressful things in life and we all second guess ourselves when we don't get the feedback we were hoping for. If we then add trying to perfect everything, we run the risk of being overwhelmed and less effective. Here's my advice:

1️⃣ Pick one thing!

❓ What is the one thing that needs the most attention? That question that seems to get you every time.

🤨 Reflect back on previous responses to get an idea of what could be improved.

📒 Create a mind map or similar with what the ideal answer would be - remember to research and use the spec and other data to frame the response. Think of the story that most demonstrates your experience.

🎤 Say it out loud so you can hear how it sounds in conversation. Better yet, record yourself.

📣 Practice it often even when you are not actively interviewing.

Funny thing - some other answers get better on their own when you become intentional about it.

You need to actively manage your probation period.

This initial period is vital and should not be left to chance and as a new start, you have as much as an obligation to manage this as your new employer does.

Here are some tips to help navigate this:

1️⃣ Meet in the first week to clearly define expectations and KPI's etc.

2️⃣ Get a list of the key people you need to meet to be effective in your new role and set up a quick introductory session with each one.

3️⃣ Get clarity on how, when and where training will take place.

4️⃣ Ask for details on who will be assisting if there is something that you need support on. It may not be the same person for different learning areas.

5️⃣ Set up predefined regular feedback sessions (at least one per month) so that any concerns can be raised and addressed as soon as possible. Note the actions to be taken, along with the responsibility of both employee and employer.

6️⃣ Ongoing meetings should include formal measures to determine whether you are successfully meeting the expected criteria.

7️⃣ Make it a formal process with scheduled and recorded meetings along with documentation and tracking.

8️⃣ Raise concerns immediately and follow all channels to address it.

9️⃣ Be extra observant on cultural nuances, dress code and general work place interactions - these can tell you a lot about the environment.

🔟 Be open to learning new/different ways and to contribute to meetings and discussions. There is a balance between sharing ideas and constantly saying at XYZ we did it this way.

You do NOT need to pay for a fancy design by those offering services to revamp your CV!

Here's what you do need:

📍 A plain CV that is data rich (shows what you do, where your strengths are, what your achievements are and how you align to the job you are applying for)

📌 A CV that is complete:

Has start and end dates for your roles.

Job titles and duties.

Qualifications with completed dates and names of institutions.

Links to portfolio of work (if applicable)

✏️ A strong personal brand and online presence

🎤 Active strategic networking

If you do decide to use a service, at least check their background for some credible recruitment or talent management experience.

2025 may be a new year but the job scammers have the same old tricks.

It is worth a reminder before you simply click like, comment as interested or worse, click a link and fill out your personal information. Times are tough, but the pain of being scammed or physically in danger is worse.

📍 If you don't recall applying and receive a text, mail or call asking to bring your CV and cash to pay for criminal/credit checks, it is likely a scam. No recruiter will ever ask you to pay. This is where an application tracking tool is useful (Excel is good).
📌 You are asked to bring your CV to a specific address that is not linked to a specific company when you research it.
📍 Take a really good look at the profiles - personal and business. Often they are very new or older but with little to no real information.
📌 The company cannot be found on Google and one or few "work" there.
📍 They make BIG statements about recruiting for many unspecific roles.
📌 There are no specific requirements at all.
📍 There are BIG claims that they recruit for whole countries.
📌 There are easy work remotely roles for positions that often require local knowledge of regulations etc.
📍 They promise high salaries and easy visas.
📌 They claim to be recruiting far too many roles for one well known company, but if you look at the respective career pages the positions do not exist.
📍 They ask you to just click like, or comment that you are interested and they will look at your profile. You get an automated response that prompts you to click a link. I assure you 100% that no reputable recruiter works this way.
📌 Anyone can apply regardless of your experience, qualifications or location.
📍 The process seems very legit with an interview and even a written offer and paperwork related to the visa and flights...but then comes the small fee (admin usually) and as soon as you pay - that is the end of it.

Please share and comment SCAM when you come across these posts. You could save a person a world of hurt.

Be safe!

I have written many posts about job scams, but there are other scams that ought to be on your radar.

There are loads of people offering CV revamps, career or interview coaching and running all sorts of talks and workshops. Nothing wrong? Well, that depends on the value you think you will get from it. Here are some things to think about before you jump in (and pay anything):

🤔 They invented themselves in this space with zero HR, talent management or recruitment experience to show and have never been on the receiving end of a CV or interview process and/or hired people as a result.
🎉 They make sensational claims about helping 500+ or more people to have gotten jobs based on their input.
✨ Almost every day they helped someone find a job, after the person has battled for ages (Hmm...)
💵 The services are cheap and likely what you get is some prettier version of your CV in a format you can never edit yourself. Maybe, you get one bulked up with perceived ATS friendly key words. It takes a very long time to analyse and rework a CV and you are better off learning how to do it yourself from reputable sources.
📄 They recycle content with very little value.
📍 They claim to have large networks full of hiring managers and HR and so commenting on their posts will get you seen.

Do yourself a favour and think it through before you buy into advice and services from just anyone. Maybe ask it this way - if you needed surgery, would you let me do it because I watched Grey's Anatomy for years and cut up oranges for practice? I doubt it.

What does a drill and a hole have to do with my interview?

People don’t go to the hardware store to buy a drill; they buy a drill because they need to make a hole.

Interviews don’t happen because they had a CV; it’s because they have a role to fill.

While an interview is a two-way street, one of the main objectives is to sell what’s in it for the company if they were to hire you. Weaving features and benefits into the stories you tell is a great way to do this.

📌 Features explain what and how you do things – I build strong relationships.
📍 Benefits explain how it adds value – I leverage my strong relationships to build trust, which leads to deeper conversations in order to understand their needs resulting in a higher sales close rate.

Always have fact-based examples to back up your statements. This makes it more relatable and the context provides an extra layer for the interviewer to differentiate you on. Prep is key here so spend some time working through your experience and how the story could be used to address different questions.

😵 Freak - how confusing it is to be job seeker these days! 😬

There seem to be a million people offering CV/LinkedIn revamp services each with a different approach, suggested templates, do's and dont's. At this rate a person will spend a lifetime keeping up with the 20 odd versions they have.

At the end of the day, common sense needs to prevail:
🔕 If the person doesn't have a solid recruitment, HR or talent management background maybe move on. Many invented themselves in this space and have never been the recipient of the CV they claim has miraculous results.
✅ Your CV doesn't need to change every time you see something online. If you have the basics and have articulated your value - you are good to go.
📝 Content over look - keep it simple. We search for words not pictures.

It's mental health awareness month. Do yourself a favour and take a mental break from the madness. The detox will do you good.

P.S: You don't even need to take this advice - LOL! 😂

The job market is tough and rejections come faster than the offers. It's emotionally, physically and mentally draining.

You reach a point where applying for anything is worth a try. If I do nothing else, I would like to protect you from the people that take advantage of the desperate need to work by posting fake jobs promising easy access with one goal - to scam you.

Here are the signs to look out for:

⚠ The role is abroad with no further specifics or they are recruiting for whole countries.

⚠ There are no specific roles listed or they say specifically from freshers to seniors and nothing else.

⚠ There are no criteria for suitability.

⚠ The salaries are high with perks.

⚠ All costs are covered and visa sorted.

⚠ All you need to do is click like, comment yes or hihi.

The look very legit and you will go through an "interview process", get a formal looking offer and request for documents and then a small fee to cover something seemingly little. THE END. No job, identity theft and out of pocket.

Protect yourself and know that you are worthy regardless of the decline mails.

What does a promotion look like and how do I get there?

Over time, some have put the concept of promotion into defined little boxes. We are also told never to tell a manager that you are after their role (especially during an interview). I am not sure that I agree…

I prefer to look at promotions like a chessboard. There are little boxes, but depending on the pieces you have and the end objective there are SO MANY options and you are allowed many strategic moves to get there. These are just a few of the options:

📍 People Manager

📍 Technical Expert

📍 Multi-functional specialist

📍 Promotion could also be seen as increased functions with higher accountability that is none of the above

Maybe you do want your manager’s job, and possibly they want their next move because there is nothing wrong with this. It’s the process that actually matters – investing in personal learning and continuous improvement. That consistency in getting better and better is what opens the door of opportunity and when you get to that point, you decide what is right and it may not look like the box you originally thought it was. In an interview, tell a story of the growth process instead because who knows what two years from now holds.

Go get it! 😀
