Todayโs visit by Minister of Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, reaffirmed the importance of bringing innovation and industrialisation together.
The Minister confirmed that the ELIDZ Science and Technology Park is South Africaโs first and only STP fully integrated within a Special Economic Zone.
He concurred that the ELIDZ should work hand in hand with the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) towards establishing Science, Technology and Innovation Parks, or Technoparks across the country, drawing on the experience of our integrated model.
This model brings investment, manufacturing, research, enterprise development and skills together within one precinct, connecting innovators with the practical needs of industry.
Our STPโs performance reflects the value of these connections. More than 71 enterprises are currently supported, while over 523 entrepreneurs have benefited from enterprise development initiatives and incubation partnerships. Since 2019/20, 2,166 beneficiaries have received technical and industry-related training, and our Design Centre has developed 33 product prototypes.
The Minister also called for the ELIDZ to drive and coordinate the Science, Technology and Innovation Forum, consolidating the existing regional platform in Buffalo City. The forum would bring government, universities, TVET colleges, science councils and industry together to identify shared priorities and develop practical responses to industrial and community challenges, with benefits extending across the Eastern Cape.
For us, the visit reinforced both the value of the work already underway and the responsibility to build on it, helping more entrepreneurs bring products to market, supporting competitive industries and extending opportunities to communities across the province.
