Media and Public Statement by the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma
13 September 2025
Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House: We wish to announce that we are looking for honest, hard working and fit South Africans to join our highly efficient and dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate.
The posts are as follows:-
โ Control Provincial Inspector | 1
โ Senior Provincial Inspector |10
โ Provincial Inspector | 67
โ Trainee Provincial Inspector | 200
We have started this recruitment process of traffic officers as part of efforts aimed at building KwaZulu-Natal to be a prosperous and safe province for all of us and future generations.
We want to clean our road networks and save innocent lives through our Zero Tolerance | No nonsense | Alufakwa campaign.
For instance, in response to reckless driving, in August alone, we arrested more than 160 motorists for drunken driving.
We arrested a senior public prosecutor, two police officers and a correctional services officer.
It is very disappointing that civil servants with the responsibility to enforce the law and also uphold it were caught breaking it.
We can confirm that the matter concerning the prosecutor has been formally enrolled, and the court has postponed proceedings to October 2025, pending the outcome of forensic blood test results.
We wish to reaffirm that no individual is above the law.
The arrest of a senior public prosecutorโsomeone entrusted with the responsibility of upholding the lawโstrikes at the very heart of the justice system and is viewed by this department with the utmost seriousness.
We expect that the matter will be handled with transparency, integrity, and in full accordance with the law.
Furthermore, as the department, in collaboration with the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster, we are actively monitoring this case and others involving law enforcement officers.
These developments have been formally raised for discussion within the Cluster to strengthen oversight and accountability mechanisms across the criminal justice value chain.
We remain resolute in our mandate to rid our roads of reckless and intoxicated drivers, regardless of rank or profession.
The safety of all road users remains our top priority.
Despite limited resources, we commend RTI officers, and all stakeholders for their continued vigilance and dedication to protecting the lives of innocent citizens.
