How to build an ATS-friendly Resume.

An applicant tracking system — or ATS, for short — is a type of resume scanning software used by recruiters and employers during the hiring process to collect, sort, scan, and rank the job applications they receive for their open positions.

How do applicant tracking systems (ATS) work? #

Applicant tracking systems act as electronic gatekeepers for employers and hiring managers. The ATS system parses a resume's content into categories and then scans it for specific and relevant keywords to determine if the job application should be passed along to the recruiter. Its job is to essentially w**d out unqualified applicants so the recruiter can devote his or her time to evaluating the candidates who are more likely to be a match for the position. In other words, the ATS is apt to toss the least-qualified candidates, rather than identify the applicants who are the best fit.

Unfortunately, that means if a resume template is not written and formatted with the applicant tracking system in mind, a qualified candidate can be easily passed over.

How to make your CV ATS-friendly #.

1. While PDF files are the best at preserving the design and format of your resume template, it is not compatible with all ATS software. If you're asked to upload your resume, play it safe and stick to a Word document in .doc or .docx. Plain-text files are also incredibly ATS-friendly for resumes, but they limit your formatting options.

2. Avoid building resume using phone apps as they usually come with graphic headers and footers that are not ideal for ATS. Simplicity is the best.

Time flies. This day, a year ago Recruiters Linkpoint (Pty) Ltd was established to provide job search and application services to job seekers across the country irrespective of qualifications, experience, skills or competence they may hold. Our customers being ; people from rural areas with poor network connectivity and those who can't afford data to last them longer in order to keep up with the search. Employed individuals with limited time looking for better opportunities. Matriculants, Nation Trade Certificates holders, students and graduates in search of internships, in-service trainings, apprenticeships, learnerships and etcetera, as well as those with no indepth knowledge of what applying entails.

We are very delightful for being able to witness the growth of this organisation, all the way from its infant times to date. I'd be lying if I can say the quest had been a smooth ride. Having to extensively explain ourselves to prove credibility to sceptics and remind them that we are not a None Profit Organisation was never an easy exercise. In the same breath we had learned and advanced our communication skills. At this point regarding the agency as emerging is definitely an understatement. Thus far about 13 known clients secured jobs and over 30 scored interviews. This is after we had adopted a 24 hour work cycle. Moreover we managed to create 3 job positions within the organization, 2 part-time agents assisting with the operations and 1 in the management sector.

Going forward we are introducing recruitment processes to small medium-sized enterprises and employment agencies without neglecting our primary service.

HOW TO ORGANISE A JOB APPLICATION PACKET:

When you apply for a job. Before a prospective employer ever meets you, you'll be judged based on your written application materials. It's critical that your application stands on its own without the benefit of spoken commentary or your magnetic personality. In other words, your submission must do all the work of demonstrating, in well-written prose, your enthusiasm and relevant skills and experience for the position. The vast majority of job applications are online and require submitting various documents such as a job application form, resume, cover letter and, if appropriate, supplementary materials.

In sequence this how you should arrange your job application packet...

1. APPLICATION FORM
Application procedures differ from employer to recruiter. On government posts, you are invariably required to complete a Z83 form which must be the first page of your Job Application packet. All application forms must always be at the front when provided.

2. COVER LETTER
The cover letter is sometimes optional, but it's an important part of any application. Do take the time to write a thoughtful one-page letter, consisting of three or four paragraphs, that communicates your enthusiasm and qualifications

3. RESUME/ CV

4. MOST RECENT QUALIFICATION

Ooops... since now quite a number of companies require the vaccination certificate, attach it after your CV then follow by your last Qualification obtained and the rest tertiary Qualifications.

5. MATRIC

6. COMPETENCY CERTIFICATES/ CERTIFICATES OF ACHIEVEMENTS/ DISABILITY CERTIFICATE

Attach the above when applicable.

7. TAX CONFIRMATION LETTER/ PAYSLIP
Attach if the advert requires you to, otherwise it's not that necessary.

* A registered agency is expected to use a professional and paid domain not a free one like Gmail, Hotmail, outlook and etcetera.

*First email reply must be an interview invitation and not an email with other instructions.
*The confidential document will request you the send a fee for background checks. Breakdown checks fees are covered by the Employer.

*They us a Gmail account which raises a red flag.
*Company name is not supposed to be confidential and a legit agency can never hide a company name.
*They have provided two emails knowing very well that only the Gmail one is active, don't fall for that.
*A Police Clearance forms part and parcel of the background checks and if you're required to provide it, at least pay relevant authorities.
