JOB PURPOSE

To ensure the unit performs efficiently and effectively and produces the marketing requirements at lowest possible cost and at highest possible quality standards in a safe working environment.
The planning and co-ordinating the whole Production Team, monitoring achievement against Production Plan, Production Efficiency, Operating Efficiency, Overall Equipment Efficiency, Direct Labour cost and Production Budget monitoring and reporting.
Responsible for the overall management and supervision of our production and packing units, areas of responsibility will include: planning and control of output, stock control, and management of performance against IPA’s and the establishment of effective production systems.

Reporting to the Operations Managers, the Unit Manager will be a key member of the senior management team, will be expected to continuously improve and develop your area and people, in terms of cost, quality, delivery, health, safety, housekeeping and the environment with a view to obtaining BRC accreditation.

JOB DIMENSION

Ensure all facets of the Production Operation are adhered to, in line with the applicable SOP’s or FFP requirements through effective communication
Identify Production Operation related problems and opportunities.
To ensure that standards and systems are maintained and exceeded through adherence to company policies and procedures. (SOP’s and Sea Harvest Policies and Procedures)
Identify and address areas for continuous improvement. Implement and maintain systems and practices necessary for an effective, innovative, safe and continuous learning (including dealing with lessons learned for all site related activities) culture among staff, contractors and suppliers.
Stay abreast of, evaluate and implement appropriate modern world-class manufacturing thinking and techniques to ensure efficient and effective operations.

Responsibilities:
Production:
• Monitor and manage Budget costs.
• Maintain and manage the usage of materials, equipment and machinery in relation with cost.
• Effective Production Planning.

Quality:

• Maintain Quality practices and manage problems.
• Maintain high quality products.
• Ensure Hygiene and Housekeeping is in line with HACCP and European Union standards.

Personnel Management:

• Oversee employee relations.
• Mentor Management development or manage poor performance.

Health and Safety:

• Ensure Food Safety Practices are adhered to.
• Ensure adherence to Health and Safety policy and procedures.

Minimum Requirements:

• Matric Certificate
• 2 Years Managerial experience working in departments similar to FFP
• Minimum qualification: Production and Inventory Management diploma or certificate
• At least 3-5 years Production experience
• Previous experience of the seafood and wet fish sector.
• Knowledge of filleting and processing wet fish.
• Experience in production planning and product costing.
• Trained in Food Hygiene, HACCP and Food Accreditation (BRC or EFSIS).

JOB PURPOSE
To ensure fully operational vessels operating safely and effectively in accordance with SAMSA and other related Maritime Regulations and company policies.

Key Performance Area’s:

MAINTENANCE

• Ensures that vessel is mechanically able to remain at sea for the full voyage without unnecessarily returning to port for repairs:
Adhering to good engineering practices at all times
Safe working procedures
Carrying out preventative & corrective maintenance on all vessel equipment under his area of responsibility
• Informing the Chief Engineer timeously of any changes in performance which may require immediate action to be taken at sea or which may require investigation by shore-based engineering staff.
• Ensure that all repairs were carried out satisfactory.
• Ensuring that the correct spare parts and the correct amount is available to maintain the efficiency of the vessel during sailing.
• Being available “full-time” during breakdowns when required and coordinating the Greasers to facilitate speedy and accurate repairs with the assistance of the workshop.

OPERATIONS AND WATCH KEEPING
• Ensuring that all machinery functions effectively during sailing and trawling

• Providing technical advice and instruction to other functional Heads eg. Skipper, Factory Manager regarding correct operation of machinery under their control and ensuring adherence thereof.

• Ensuring that the hold temperatures are maintained at the specified temperatures at all times.

• Ensuring that the recognized watch keeping practices are adhered to:
• Handing and taking over a watch
• Monitoring the machinery by placing watch keeper in engine room so as to ensure the smooth running thereof.

ADMINISTRATION:
• Ensuring that the vessels engineering stores requirements for every trip are adequate, taking into account the vessel’s operating parameters & length of voyage.
• Ensuring that all documentation for every voyage as per SAMSA & Company requirements is in order and handed over at the docking meeting to the relevant manager eg.
• Engine room log book
• Defect book
• Freezer plant log books
• Marpol
• Trip report book
• PM cards
• Keeping accurate daily record of fuel consumption
• Ensuring that engine room staff are informed of operating procedures regarding operation and maintenance of equipment .
• Write new operating procedures and modify existing procedures as required.

SAFETY:
• Taking full responsibility for the safety of the engine room staff and machinery..

• Ensuring that all subordinates are familiar with emergency procedures such as:
Individual duties in the event of a fire
Types of alarms
Fire fighting aids

• Ensuring that good “housekeeping” practices are followed in the engine room such as:
Pump/motor coupling guards securely in place
Clean oil-free engine room & decks
No rags & tools lying around
Deck plating secured
General cleanliness

• Ensuring that all emergency safety procedures are complied with regarding the engine room such as:
Fire fighting
State of bilges
Emergency lights
Alarms
Escape hatches
Fuel trip valves
Bilge and fire pumps
Any other safety equipment

• Ensuring that vessel is adequately stocked with equipment to ensure safety of engine room staff in line with duty, such as: protective clothing.

• Ensuring vessel stability at all times

• Ensuring that operation of machinery does not infringe on any International, South African or Company regulations regarding protection of Marine Environment.


BUNKERING:
• Ensuring that correct grades of fuel and lubrication oils are loaded
• Quantities confirmed before and after loading
• Correct tanks identified before bunkering

• Processes according to SAMSA watch keeping and MARPOL standards


MANPOWER MANAGEMENT AND TRAINING:
• Directing efforts of subordinates using approved management techniques, paying particular attention to the safety and development of engine room staff.

• Undertaking discipline at sea of subordinates in terms of Company Policy & Merchant Shipping Act adhering at all times to approve disciplinary procedures.

• Dealing with subordinate grievances in accordance with the Grievance procedure.
