I'm looking for an Assistant General Manager for my client, a boutique coastal resort in Ballito, KZN.

This is a second-in-command role with full operational authority when the GM isn't in the building. Not one for someone who's only ever done F&B or Front of House. My client wants someone who's worked their way up through most departments over their career, with particular depth in Housekeeping and Maintenance.

• Deputising for the GM with full operational management
• Housekeeping and Maintenance standards ownership
• Oversight of F&B and Front of House
• Managing and developing department heads

What I need from you:
• 5+ years of senior hospitality management experience, progressing through operational roles
• Hands-on strength in Housekeeping and Maintenance specifically
• Proven experience managing budgets, stock, and teams

On Offer
• R25 000 - R35 000 per month CTC.
• Single Occupancy on-site accommodation
• Medical & Provident Fund

RECRUITMENT | The REAL Brief

In hospitality, I hear this constantly.
"Must have 5 star hotel experience."
"Must come from the industry."
"Must have done this role before, in this type of property."

And then the same leadership team sits in a board meeting saying:
"We need fresh ideas."
"We need someone who thinks differently."
"We need innovation."

But you can't hire for familiarity and expect disruption.

Some of the best General Managers I have seen in this industry came from finance.
They understood the numbers behind every operational decision before they ever ran a property. Some came from retail. They understood people, pressure, volume, and service recovery at a scale most hotels never see.

The brief that says "must have done this exact role before" is sometimes the brief that keeps the same thinking in the room.

The best hire is not always the obvious one. Sometimes it's the candidate who brings everything you need, just not in the package you expected.

Pay = 46%

The pay problem is the one operators focus on. The burnout and growth problems are the ones that quietly empty your leadership bench.

I have had so many conversations with senior hospitality professionals who were not looking for more money. They were looking for a leader worth following, a role with room to grow, and a workplace that did not grind them down by month three.

If your retention strategy is just a salary review, you are solving one-third of the problem.
