Diplomatic Clarification: Nigeria Denies “Igbo King” Coronation in South Africa Amid Tensions
The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria has officially addressed widespread reports claiming that an “Igbo King” was recently crowned in East London, South Africa—an incident that sparked protests and concern among some South African citizens.
In a clear and firm statement, the Commission dismissed the claims, emphasizing that no such coronation took place and that there was never any plan or intention to install a traditional ruler in the area. The clarification was issued to calm rising tensions and prevent further misunderstanding between local communities and members of the Nigerian diaspora.
The rumors had circulated widely on social media, triggering reactions from South Africans who viewed the alleged coronation as a challenge to local authority and cultural structures. This led to public demonstrations in parts of East London, with calls for clarification from both governments.
Nigerian officials reiterated their respect for South Africa’s sovereignty, laws, and traditional institutions, stressing that Nigerians living in the country are expected to abide by all local regulations. They also urged the public to disregard false information and avoid actions that could escalate tensions or promote xenophobia.
The High Commission further called for peaceful coexistence and mutual respect between South Africans and foreign nationals, highlighting the long-standing diplomatic and economic relationship between both nations.
