COLLEGE SPORTS WRAP

This is a week made for great college memories…walking to class with a light jacket on because the mornings are crisp, enjoying the crush of falling leaves on the footpaths and sidewalks on the way to class, sensing important games in fall sports as seasons close and athletes compete alongside each other as teammates for the last time, and championship runs are fine-tuned.
Cross-country runners look forward to the upcoming conference titles and NCAA competitions, football players hope to keep the injuries to a minimum while raising their level of play, and soccer players can feel the surge to the playoffs. Volleyball players wonder how much success they’ll have as championships lay ahead. Golfers put away their clubs for the fall.
So, we tell some tales this week about Vivian Bishop, who did something significant for herself and her team…about Lillian Boesel and her team-leading efforts…about swimmers Elizabeth Share, AJ Merced and Hayden Smith…and Lydia Hickey on the links.
And so much more.

SOCCER

Saturday had to be a big day for Maine/Farmington freshman soccer forward Vivian Bishop (North Rose-Wolcott). She and her Beaver teammates had played 15 games so far this season and hadn’t won any of them. Vivian had been in every game, starting nine of them.
Then Saturday, and the second-to-last game on the schedule, against Vermont/Lyndon, a team with a similar record – 10 games without a win.
Farmington scored first, Halle Clifford getting her fourth score of the season. Emma Dunn scored – her first goal of the fall – and when Clifford scored again, and again, the Beavers had a 4-0 lead at the 60th minute. Was something special reserved for this day?
It sure was. In the 63rd minute, Vivian broke through for an unassisted score – her very first goal of the season and of her collegiate career. The game ended 5-1.
Maine/Farmington (1-13-2; 1-5 North Atlantic Conference) wraps up the regular season on Wednesday against Maine/Presque Isle.

Lillian Boesel (Pal-Mac), a sophomore midfielder for Monroe Community College, registered assists on goals by Emily Peacock, Claudia Cuadras and Julie Engstler on Wednesday when the Tribunes floored Bryant & Stratton, 6-0. She also took two shots, putting one on goal. Freshman defensive midfielder Jocelynn Carpenter (Williamson) got in the game as well – her first time on the pitch for the Tribunes this season – but did not offer a shot.
Monroe is 11-1-2; Lillian leads the team in scoring with 11 goals and nine assists. The Tribunes will enter post-season play on Wednesday.

In the last game before the East Coast Conference playoffs begin, Roberts Wesleyan women’s soccer fought Molloy University to a 0-0 tie on Saturday afternoon. Freshman forward Lauren Schmeelk (Williamson) entered the game off the bench and did not offer a shot. The Redhawks open the post-season by hosting D’Youville University on Wednesday in the conference quarterfinals.
Roberts is the four seed in the playoffs, D’Youville is the fifth seed. The Redhawks have an undefeated record at home (4-0-6) and eight shutouts.

Women’s soccer at RIT lost to Ithaca on Wednesday, 2-3, but came back for a big 6-1 win against Bard College on Saturday. Junior midfielder Reilly Batzold (North Rose-Wolcott) came off the bench in the Bard game and put two shots on goal. The Tigers are 6-5-3 (4-3-1 Liberty League).

St. John Fisher men’s soccer labored for a 2-2 draw with Brockport on Wednesday, then lost to Geneseo State on Saturday, 1-3, in the last game of the regular season. Junior goalkeeper Andrew Thomas (Pal-Mac) played the last 25 minutes against Geneseo and made one save, yielding no scores. The Cardinals are 7-5-3 (6-3-2 Empire 8) and enter the conference playoffs as the fourth seed, meeting fifth-seeded Brockport on Saturday.

Alfred University women’s soccer finished its season with a 0-1 loss to Elmira on Wednesday and a 2-1 win over Russell Sage in the season curtain-closer Saturday. Junior midfielder Anna Henner (Williamson) got into the Elmira game but did not record a shot. The Saxons are 3-10-4 (2-7-2 E-8)

The soccer season seems to be falling apart for the Stetson University women, who lost to Florida Gulf Coast University last Sunday, 0-2, and to North Florida on Saturday, 0-1. The Hatters now own a seven-game losing streak with two games left in the season. Senior goalie Clare Boesel (Pal-Mac) made two saves against FGCU. The Hatters are 2-13 (0-7 ASUN).

Scoring is a huge problem for the University at Albany women’s soccer, which hasn’t put a goal in the net in eight games. The only time the Bulls have been making any positive headway has been when the defense keeps the opposition from scoring and the games end in 0-0 draws – that’s happened three times in the last six games.
Buffalo tied Akron last Sunday, 0-0, and lost to Bowling Green, 0-2, on Saturday. Junior midfielder Maya Ikewood (Pal-Mac) came off the bench and fired two shots versus Bowling Green. Buffalo is 4-6-6 (1-4-4 MAC).

And scoring was also a problem for Alfred State’s women this week as the Pioneers came away with a scoreless tie with Oswego State on Wednesday, and lost to Oneonta State on Saturday, 0-4. Pioneer sophomore scoring phenom Isabella Hoffman (Gananda) put two shots on goal in the Oswego game and one more against Oneonta, but couldn’t get the ball to the twine. The Pioneers are 7-6-2 (3-4-1 SUNYAC) with the conference playoffs beginning this Wednesday against sixth-seeded Buffalo State.

Gannon University women’s soccer played Slippery Rock University to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday, then beat Pitt/Johnstown on Saturday, 3-1 to place the Golden Knights’ record at 12-2-3 (11-2-2 PSAC). Freshman starting defensive midfielder Sydney Howard (Wayne Central) was in both games for Gannon; she did not offer a shot.

Junior midfielder Abby Sanzotta (Red Creek) and her Greensboro College teammates are sitting in third place in the USA South Conference after two wins during the week, one more game scheduled for this Wednesday, then the playoffs begin on Saturday.
The victories this week were over Shaw University, 3-0, on Wednesday, and 1-0 over Meredith College on Saturday. Abby got off two shots in each game, and one of them was on goal in the Meredith win. The Pride is 8-4-5 (4-1-3 USA South).

Keuka College women’s soccer finished its season with a 0-4 loss to Nazareth on Wednesday and a 2-2 draw with Hartwick College on Saturday. The Wolves are 4-9-3 on the season, 0-8-3 in the Empire 8 Conference. Keuka will compete in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference next fall.
Freshman starting midfielder Bailey Cook (Wayne Central) got off one shot in the Naz loss but did not shoot in the Hartwick tie.

Le Moyne College sophomore midfielder Ella Lathrop (Gananda) played about a third of the game and launched one shot when the Dolphins knocked off Chicago State last Sunday, 3-1. The Dolphins are 5-10-1 (4-2-1 NEC).

VOLLEYBALL

Finger Lakes Community College volleyball conquered the Mid-State Athletic Conference playoffs with two big Saturday wins – 3-0 over Jefferson CC and 3-1 against Genesee CC in the championship final, 3-1.
Sophomore Ava Van Antwerp (Gananda) posted three kills and a block assist against Jefferson; freshman Jade Stoner (Newark) saw some action but recorded no stats. In the Geneseo win, Ava produced six kills and added five block assists.
FLCC is 32-1 and now heads to the NJCAA Region III semifinals this coming Saturday.

Nazareth volleyball had a good week, starting with a 0-3 loss to St. John Fisher on Wednesday, but followed by wins over Keuka College on Friday, 3-1, and Elmira College on Saturday, 3-0. Senior setter Anna Malbone (Wyne Central) made seven assists and six digs in the Fisher loss; produced 13 assists, a service ace and four digs against Keuka; and finished with eight assists and four aces against Elmira. The Golden Flyers 5-16 (3-6 Empire 8).

SUNY Polytechnic volleyball was shut out twice this week, by Brockport on Friday and then by Geneseo on Saturday. Wildcat junior outside hitter Kara Stephens (Lyons) was in the game but had no stats versus Brockport; in the Geneseo game, she had one kill and one dig. The Wildcats fall to 3-21 (2-7 E-8).

Keuka College lost to Nazareth on Friday, 1-3, and to St. John Fisher on Saturday, 0-3. Freshman middle hitter Emily Nevlezer (North Rose-Wolcott) played in the Fisher game and had four attack attempts. The Wolves are 10-14 (3-6 E-8).

SWIMMING

Oneonta State women’s swimming had no answers for Rensselaer Polytechnic on Saturday in a 92-180 loss. Red Dragon sophomore Sydney Richards (Gananda) took second places in the 200 breaststroke (2:47.19) and the 100 individual medley (2:26.25), finished fourth in the 200 free (2:11.26) and swam the second leg of the third-place 400 medley relay (4:24.30).

Roberts Wesleyan men’s swimming finished in second place in Saturday’s Rochester Institute of Technology Tiger Invitational meet. Sophomore Hayden Smith (Pal-Mac) swam the first leg of the second-place 200 free relay (1:29.38) with teammate AJ Merced (Newark) taking the third leg. Hayden finished 11th in the 50 free (23.28), 12th in the 50 breaststroke (31.97), 15th in the 100 free (53.02), swam the second leg of the seventh-place 200 medley relay (1:53.32) and anchored the sixth-place 400 free relay (3:29.91).
AJ claimed fourth place in the 200 individual medley (2:03.60), seventh place in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.82), eighth place in the 500 free (5:16.54), took the first leg of the third-place 400 free relay (3:18.85), and anchored the fifth-place 400 individual medley relay (4:15.22).

William Smith College opened its ’26-‘27 season on Saturday with a big win over Pitt/Bradford, 157-25. Heron senior Bria Romano (Lyons) swam the third leg of the third-place 200 free relay (2:03.67), second part of the fourth-place 200 medley relay (2:09.43), and placed third in the 100 breaststroke (1:29.27).

Alfred University women swimmers are o-for-2 after losing a dual meet to Brockport State on Saturday, 83-214. Junior Elizabeth Share (Pal-Mac) did her best to stem the tide for Alfred – she won the 100 backstroke (1:01.67) and 100 individual medley (1:03.31), opened the second-place 200 medley relay (1:55.80), and took second in the 50 backstroke (28.32).

FOOTBALL

St. John Fisher football made the game with Cortland State interesting in the second half, but the Dragons prevailed, 20-28. Freshman defensive back Camron Quick (Pal-Mac) got into the game for the Cardinals but recorded no stats. Fisher is 5-2 (2-2 E-8).

GOLF

Geneseo State women’s golf competed in the Northeast Women’s Golf Conference Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, playing at the par 72 Foxfire Golf Club in Geneseo on Monday and the par 73 Camillus Country Club on Tuesday. The Knights finished second on the Foxfire links with junior Lydia Hickey (Macedon/Penfield) shooting a 102, good for 10th place.
On Tuesday, Lydia carded a 96 and finished in a tie for 18th with the Knights fourth overall as a team. The team finishes its fall schedule with this event and will return to the greens and fairways in April.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Next Saturday is the big day for cross-country events as conference championships are decided, but Keuka College’s harriers put in a little extra work on Saturday at the Hamilton College Tune-up Cross-Country Invitational. Sophomore Alston Hernandez (North Rose-Wolcott) was the fourth Wolf finisher, in 36th place (19:15.2) over the 5K distance. Junior teammate Rylie Pratt (Wayne Central) came in 46th (24:06.9) in the women’s 4K.

NEWS

Le Moyne College, which is now part of the Division I Northeast Conference, has accepted an invitation to join the Metro Conference (formerly the MAAC) as of the beginning of the 2027-28 academic year. That means the Dolphins, who were once part of the MAAC, will compete with Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Merrimack, Mount S. Mary’s, Niagara, Quinnipiac, Rider, Sacred Heart and Sienna in 22 sports.

Organized by the Newark Fire Department Auxiliary and the Home for the Holidays Committee, this community celebration brings together decorated vehicles, Halloween treats, music, and plenty of festive fun right in the heart of the village.
Last year, more than 400 trick-or-treaters came through Central Park, and we're anticipating another great turnout this Halloween!

DOUG TOWNSEND RETIRES IN NEWARK

NEWARK, Oct 22 26 – Doug Townsend, the village Department of Public Works (DPW) Foreman, is retiring at the end of October. The Village has scheduled a reception on Oct. 30 to thank him for his 30 years of service to the Village and the Community.
“Doug’s knowledge, gained by his years of experience, will be greatly missed,” said Mayor Jonathan Taylor. “He has been involved in all aspects of DPW work and has served on committees for cemeteries, Community Pride Day, and Home for the Holidays. Doug’s expertise regarding trees and plants will be difficult to replace.”
Mark Perry added, “Doug has worked tirelessly to make Newark a better place to live and to raise a family. The dedication he has given to this village is truly commendable."
The reception on Oct. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m., will be held at Doug Kent’s Rose Bowl Lanes, 725 West Miller St.
Please stop in any time during those hours to wish Doug well in his retirement.

We just made the turn into frost-on-the-pumpkins weather, and that means that the college sports world is rushing into playoffs and championships while we get started with the swimming calendar. I can’t find any Wayne County athletes competing in college ice hockey, and our swim roster is pretty thin…if you know an athlete who should be on our list, please don’t hesitate to send me a note.
We’ve had one champion grab the crown this week – JoAnn Catalano at Geneseo tennis. Alfred University swimmer Elizabeth Share has already started winning races. Alfred State soccer phenom Isabella Hoffman is suddenly nudging all-time leaders in the college’s record book. Gracie Decker and Sophia Delfs are lighting a fire under Finger Lakes Community College soccer. Meah Prutzman had a truly noteworthy cross-country finish for John Carroll University.
And so much more…

BOWLING

Vanderbilt University senior bowler Natalie Kent (Newark) got her final season started on Friday under new head coach Josie Barnes at the Chelsea Gilliam Penguin Classic at Youngstown State. She was a starter for the No. 2 nationally ranked Commodores and the team emerged unbeaten on the first day of competition, beating fourth-ranked Arkansas State (1,032-984), 18th-ranked Mount St. Mary’s (1,001-925), ninth-ranked North Carolina A&T (1,169-1,085), top-ranked Jacksonville State (1,118-1,100) and Western Illinois (971-867).

SOCCER

Women’s soccer at the University at Buffalo played two games during the week and didn’t score in either, losing to Western Michigan on Sunday, 0-1, but managing a 0-0 tie with Massachusetts on Thursday. Junior midfielder Maya Ikewood (Pal-Mac) started the first game and came off the bench to play most of the second game. The Bulls are 4-5-5 (1-3-3 MAC).

Senior goalkeeper Clare Boesel (Pal-Mac) needs some defense in front of her to keep the Stetson Hatters in their games. Last Sunday, North Florida won the game, 0-3, and all three goals were chalked up to Clare. But a quick second look and you realize that although she gave up three, she made saves on 10 more shots. The Hatters fall to 2-11 (0-5 ASUN).

Oswego State women’s soccer unfurled its offense this week, blasting two opponents by a total of 11 scores. On Wednesday the Lakers mashed Morrisville State, 4-0, and on Saturday, Oswego canned Canton, 7-0. Freshman midfielder Lily Aylett (Gananda) got into both games but did not offer a shot. The Lakers are 4-7-2 (2-2-2 SUNYAC).

Roberts Wesleyan women’s soccer lost to Bentley University on Wednesday, 0-2, beat Daemen University on Friday, 1-0, and got a win by forfeit from St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday. Freshman forward Lauren Schmeelk (Williamson) was in both of the games played, but did not take a shot. The Redhawks are 7-3-5 (3-2-1 ECC) with one game left in the regular season, on Saturday against Molloy.

Sophomore Lillian Boesel (Pal-Mac) scored three goals and made an assist to lead Monroe Community College soccer to a 5-0 victory over Sussex County CC on Saturday. She scored the first goal with just 41 seconds gone, Julie Engstler getting the assist. Lillian then scored the third Tribune goal in the 51st minute, Mia Cariola assisting, and finished with the fourth goal nine minutes later, Supapaun Khounpachamsy recording the assist. Lillian assisted in Claudia Cuadrtas’ goal in the 49th minute. MCC is 10-1-2; Lillian has seven goals and three assists.

Alfred State women’s soccer had a 50/50 week, losing to Buffalo State on Wednesday, 1-3, then beating Cobleskill State on Saturday, 3-1. Sophomore striker Isabella Hoffman (Gananda) was the lone scorer for the Pioneers against Buff State, connecting in the ninth minute of the game, unassisted, for her 10th score of the season. If the Pioneers could have done something with Riley Stevenson, the outcome might have been a lot different – Riley scored all three goals for the Bengals.
On Saturday, things were a lot different for Alfred State, and Isabella was zooming: she scored in the 21st minute (Maddie Mark assist), the 22nd minute (Elizabeth Sorce assist) and 88th minute (Regan Curabba assist) – a hat trick. She now has 13 goals (and five assists). The Pioneers are 7-5-1 (3-3 SUNYAC).
In the Alfred State record book, Isabella is tied for third in goals for a single season at 13; she’s third all-time in career goals at 28; she’s tied for fifth in points per single season with 31, and she tied for fifth in career points at ASC at 59.

Finger Lakes Community College women’s soccer worked a 1-1 tie with Onondaga CC last Sunday and waffled Tompkins Cortland CC on Saturday, 6-1. Freshman midfielder Sophia Delfs (Newark) got the goal for the Lakes against Onondaga with Heather Van Der Lek earning the assist. Freshman Gracie Decker (Gananda) put a shot on goal for the Lakes, Alexis Galina (Gananda) was on the pitch but did not register any stats.
On Saturday, Tompkins Cortland goalie Lydia Scutt must have left the pitch with visions of Sophia Delfs dancing in her head – Sophia took 15 shots, put 10 on goal and scored twice. In fact, the Lakers took 40 shots. Gracie also scored two goals – and she took 10 shots and put six on goal. Poor Lydia may not want to see the Lakers ever again.
Sophia’s scores were in the 21st minute and the 40th, both unassisted. Gracie’s tallies were in the 24th minute (Avery Greene assist) and 39th minute, unassisted. Sophia’s assist came in the 76th minute, helping Hester Van Der Lek score. Sophomore Kadience Powell (North Rose-Wolcott) got off one shot; Alexis was on the field but didn’t need to take a shot.
The Lakers are 3-5-2.

Gannon University women’s soccer has an 11-2-2 record with three games to play in the regular schedule before the PSAC playoffs begin, where the Golden Knights are now 10-2-1.
During the week, the Knights grabbed two big wins, 1-0 over Adelphi on Wednesday, and 4-1 against Lock Haven on Saturday. Freshman starting defensive midfielder Sydney Howard (Wayne Central) played every minute of both games and her efforts are reflected through the scores.

Greensboro College women’s soccer got its first win this month on Saturday, squeaking past Mary Baldwin College, 2-1. Earlier in the week, the Pride had lost to Johnson & Wales, 0-1. Junior midfielder Abby Sanzotta (Red Creek) started both games for Greensboro and put a shot on goal in each. The Pride is 6-4-5 (3-1-3 USA South).

Keuka College women’s soccer played SUNY Poly and Alfred University to draws – 1-1 with Poly on Wednesday and 0-0 with the Saxons on Saturday. Wolf freshman midfielder Bailey Cook (Wayne Central) fired three shots in each game, putting all three on goal against POLY and one on goal versus Alfred. Keuka is 4-82 (0-7-2 E-8).

Le Moyne College women’s soccer got past Howard University, 3-2, last Sunday, culminating a two-game win streak that equaled the games win total for the rest of the season – two. Sophomore midfielder Ella Lathrop (Gananda) came into the game off the bench but did not attempt a shot. Le Moyne is 4-10-1 (3-2-1 NEC).

For Alfred University women’s soccer, the goal-scoring was nowhere to be found as the Saxons lost to Geneseo State on Wednesday, 0-1, and tied with Keuka College on Saturday, 0-0. Junior midfielder Anna Henner (Williamson) joined both games from the Saxon bench and did not take a shot. Alfred is 2-9-4 (16-2 E-8).

CROSS-COUNTRY

Geneseo State hosted the 44th annual Mike Woods Invitational Cross-Country meet on Friday at Letchworth State Park.
St. John Fisher junior Landon Wertz (Marion) finished 87th (27:57.4) in the Championship 8K in a field of 191 competitors. The Cardinal men finished 19th as a team.
Houghton University junior Gwenna Haas (Red Creek) came in 163rd (27:53.6) in the Championship 6K in a field of 181.

At the Canisius University Alumni Classic cross-country meet on Saturday, Monroe Community College freshman Sam Sullivan (Wayne Central) finished 121st (31:17.1) in a field of 139 runners in the men’s 8K; freshman teammate Annamarie Parulski (East Palmyra Christian) came in 115th (23:56.0) in the women’s 5K field of 122 runners.

John Carroll University sophomore Meah Prutzman (Gananda) finished 20th (23:28.9) at the Oberlin College Inter-Regional Rumble 6K on Saturday in a field of 188 runners. The Blue Streaks as a team came in 13th among 22 colleges.

Finger Lakes Community College harriers competed at the Mid-State Athletic Conference Meet 5K held in Canandaigua on Saturday. Freshman Elizabeth Pullen (Newark) finished sixth (28:47.20) and freshman teammate Megan McGregor (Marion) came in seventh (32:38.48) in a field of nine runners.

Hartwick College junior Julia Weinschreider (Williamson) helped her team win the hometown Hartwick College Invitational Meet 6K on Saturday by finishing third overall (31:37.0).

Keuka College sophomore Alston Hernandez (North Rose-Wolcott) was the second Wolf runner to finish the Hobart/William Smith Warner-Fleury Invitational 8K, arriving at the chute in 30:51.4 (47 seconds faster than his best finish in the event). The Keuka men finished fifth in team standings; the event had 67 runners.
Junior Rylie Pratt (Wayne Central) finished 56th (37:13.9) in the women’s 6K in a field of 62 competitors. The Keuka women were also fifth.

Lipscomb University freshman Hannah Governor (Williamson) competed in the Pre-National Invitational 6K Blue Race on Friday, finishing 171st (21:22.3).

VOLLEYBALL

Nazareth volleyball claimed its third win of the season on Friday, 3-2 over Brockport State; on Saturday, the Golden Flyers absorbed their 15th loss of the year, falling to Geneseo 1-3. Senior setter Anna Malbone (Wayne Central) provided 17 assists and a service ace in the Brockport game; she had 11 assists, an ace and five digs in the Geneseo loss. Naz is 1-5 in Empire 8 Conference play.

Corning Community College volleyball had four games this week, losing three of them. We have box scores on two of those games – a 1-3 loss to Holyoke CC on Sunday and a 3-1 win over Union College, also on Sunday. Sophomore middle blocker Kayla Bellefontaine (Marion) mashed six kills versus Holyoke and blocked two shots; in the Union win, she smacked five kills and blocked one shot.
The Red Barons lost games to Monroe CC and Finger Lakes CC on Saturday, but we have no box scores for those games. Corning is 8-13.

Finger Lakes Community College volleyball has an unconscious 30-1 record after recording four wins during the week – 3-0 over Holyoke CC last Sunday, 3-1 over Monroe CC on Thursday, and 3-0 over Broome CC and Corning CC on Saturday.
We have box scores for two games. In the Holyoke win, sophomore Ava Van Antwerp (Gananda) had seven kills and in the Monroe win, she added four more plus two block assists.

Keuka College volleyball dropped both of its games during the week, losing to Alfred University on Friday, 0-3, and to Houghton on Saturday, 0-3. Keuka freshman middle hitter Emily Nevlezer (North Rose-Wolcott) got into the Alfred game but recorded no stats. The Wolves are 10-11 (303 E-8).

SWIMMING

Roberts Wesleyan opened its swim schedule on Saturday, the men losing to Union College, 101-181, and the women losing a quad meet at Union – to Smith, 75-215, to Westfield State, 124-158, and to Union, 100-177.
Hayden Smith (Pal-Mac), a Roberts sophomore, finished third in the 50 free (23.17), was fifth in the 100 free (53.08), swam the second leg of the winning 200 free relay (1:30.41) anchored the fourth-place 200 medley relay (1:50.92). Sophomore teammate AJ Merced (Newark) swam the first leg of that fourth-place 200 medley relay finish. He also took second in the 200 free (1:52.71), third in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.75) and finished the day by swimming the third leg of the third-place 200 free relay (1:35.74).

Oneonta State women’s swimming has two meets under its caps – a third-place finish in the Hartwick College Relays on Oct. 10, and a loss to Oswego State in a dual meet on Saturday, 78-135.
Sophomore Sydney Richards (Gananda) swam the opening legs of the second-place 300 breaststroke relay at Hartwick (4:00.98) and third place 600 individual medley relay (7:45.41), took the third leg of the second-place 850 Crescendo Relay (9:38.83) and the second leg of the second-place 800 medley relay (10:12.67).
At Otsego, Sydney swam the second leg of the second-place 200 medley relay (2:00.24), was second herself in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.34) and was sixth in the 50 individual medley (34.00).

Alfred University women swimmers lost a dual meet with Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday, 79-205. In the pool for the Saxons was junior Elisabeth Share (Pal-Mac) who won the 100 backstroke (1:01.72) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.88), finished second in the 200 back (2:17.23), and swam the first leg of the third-place 200 medley relay (1:57.06) – accounting for almost a third of Alfred’s point total.

FOOTBALL

Alfred State College lost just its second game this season on Saturday, succumbing to Brockport State, 14-24, in an Empire 8 Conference tilt. Sophomore wide receiver Marcus Asberry (Lyons) was in the game for the Pioneers but did not record any stats. Alfred State is 4-2 (1-2 E-8).

GOLF

Geneseo State sophomore Lydia Hickey (Macedon/Penfield) was the highest-placing Knight at the Empire 8 Invitational Women’s Golf Tournament, played at the par 72 Lake Shore Yacht & Country Club in Geneseo, carding a two-round score of 186 (42 over par) to finish tied for eighth.
The Keuka College men finished seventh in Men’s Empire 8 Fall Championships, led by freshman Jace Paylor (Clyde-Savannah) who tied for 36 with rounds of 85 and 86 (27 over par). Freshman teammate Jackson Barr (Clyde-Savannah) finished 48th with rounds of 130 and 93 – 79 over par.

TENNIS

Geneseo State tennis, with senior JoAnn Catalano (Williamson) in the middle of things, spent the weekend winning the Empire 8 Conference Team Championship and punching tickets to the NCAA playoffs in May.
On Friday, the unbeaten and top-seeded Knights met fourth-seeded Nazareth and won, 4-0. JoAnn and partner Natalie Pipes took care of Nazareth’s Anna Spencer and Lily Brady, 6-1, in first doubles. JoAnn was ahead 6-1 in fourth singles over Paige Masrouri when the meet was decided.
Saturday afternoon Geneseo met sixth-seeded Alfred University and won again, 4-0, to claim the title. JoAnn and Natlie bested Saxons Rebecca Eping and Alyssa Seegert, 6-2 in first doubles.
JoAnn again had a big lead on her opponent in fourth singles, Allison Windisch, 6-2, when the overall match was decided. Geneseo is 13-0.

It's official: the state tax credit for our vol. firefighters and EMS providers is going from $200 to $800.

I was proud to cosponsor this bill and fight for it alongside our local fire departments and EMS squads. Together with my colleagues in the Legislature, we got it across the finish line.
