Railroads, Trains, Trolleys, and Stations in Wayne County
Interurban Station, Trolley, and Opera House

Shown in this postcard is a good bit of Wayne County history of a bygone era. The Rochester, Syracuse and Eastern Electric Railway (Trolley) operated from 1906 to 1931, linking Rochester to Syracuse with stations in many of the towns along the Erie Canal between the two cities, including Palmyra. The route was 83 miles long. The line had 19 stations like this one servicing towns along the route.

As for the Opera House (background). The building in now home to the Palmyra village offices located on the first floor. The second floor, originally the opera house theater, is now (according to the Village of Palmyra website) unused. The Opera House was built in 1868. Renown Syracuse architect, Horatio Nelson White designed the building. (Yes, he was named after the British Admiral.)

Many thanks to Ken May for sharing this postcard.
