Since this month is Disability Employment Awareness Month, we thought it would be important to share some of the resources available to job seekers with disabilities.

Locally, Vocational Rehabilitation Services can assist a job seeker with obtaining and maintaining employment and all that is in between. This includes any education or training needed to be employed in the career path chosen. Counselors can assist with finding the right job fit for skills and abilities as well as working with employers who hire job candidates and educating them on possible accommodations to learn and maintain the job. VR works with community providers that can support candidates on the job by providing job development and coaching services. Self-employment is also an option and VR services can provide tips and tricks to owning a successful business.
IowaWorks job centers provide integrated training, education and assistive technology assistance.

At the national level Job Accommodation Network (JAN) can help employees and employers come up with the best accommodations based on the Americans with Disabilities Act for the job. This service is free and confidential.
If you are receiving Social Security Income (SSI), you are also provided with Ticket-to-Work. This service allows you to choose a provider in the network to provide employment services for you to obtain and maintain employment.

For job seekers, abilityJOBS is a great way to connect employers with job seekers with disabilities.
