Food is about more than just nourishment - it's an opportunity to connect, to share a piece of our culture, and create memories we can hold onto forever.

Residents, do you have a recipe that holds significance to you? We want to hear about the meals that matter, and the stories behind them.

Yesterday, advocates showed up for nursing home and long-term care residents. We met with Senators and Representatives at their desks in their D.C. offices, and from living rooms, kitchen tables, and offices across the country. Along with stats, we shared stories about real people and real experiences.

The conversation doesn't end on June 4. You can get involved any day of the year:
-Call your Congressional representative's office
-Send a message through Consumer Voice's advocacy toolkit
-Share this post so more people know the importance of putting faces to the issues affecting consumers

Don't forget, Congress represents us, and it's crucial we make them aware of the issues that matter. Learn more about how to get involved: https://theconsumervoice.org/get-involved.

Today is the day!

Advocates from across the country are heading to Capitol Hill both in-person and virtually for Legislative Advocacy Day.

These meetings ensure that resident stories and the impacts of staffing shortages and lack of oversight on care and finances are reaching the desks of the lawmakers who can make a difference.

If you couldn't join today, you can still help. It’s never a bad time to raise the issues and ask Congress to act.

Congress has the power to protect long-term care consumers, and it’s time to remind them what’s at stake if they don’t.

These aren't abstractions, they are the realities long-term care consumers face today.

On June 4, we are asking advocates - whether you are a family member, with an organization, or a resident yourself - to go directly to Congress and tell them the time to act is now.

A new episode of the Pursuing Quality Long-Term Care podcast is now available!

Good food is something we all look forward to, something that tastes good, nourishes us, connects us to culture and community, and that we enjoy sharing with friends and family. That doesn’t change when someone moves into a long‑term care facility. In fact, food often matters more to people living in long-term care. At its best, food supports nutrition and health, triggers positive memories, and provides moments of comfort and connection. However, we know this isn't always the case. In fact, poor food is often one of the top complaints that residents share with Ombudsmen representatives and family members. When Consumer Voice conducted a survey of over 450 residents last year, two thirds of respondents said that their food usually doesn't look or smell appealing.

In this episode, we’re joined by Vanessa Emm, the Operations Director for the National Association of Activities Professionals (NAAP) who has worked in the long-term care field for over 20 years. We are also joined by Summer Nancollas, a Culinary Director at a Senior Living Community in Nevada. Join us as we talk about why food plays such a central role in residents’ well‑being, what gets in the way of good meals in long‑term care, and the best practices that facilities can use to create dining experiences that truly honor residents’ needs, preferences, and dignity.

Every nursing home resident has the legal right to be free from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and misappropriation of property.

Under federal law, this includes freedom from:
-Corporal punishment
-Involuntary seclusion
-Any physical or chemical restraint not required to treat a medical condition
-Verbal, sexual, physical, and mental abuse

These are not suggestions, they are federally protected rights, and it's crucial that residents know them in order to demand them.
