Salespeople are professional communicators. They are literally trained to build rapport, sound confident, and handle objections on the fly.

If your interview process is just a casual chat and a resume review, you aren't evaluating their ability to sell your product. You are just evaluating their ability to sell themselves.

To find the top 1%, you have to shift from a "conversational" interview to a behavioral assessment. Here is the 3-part framework to consider:

➡️1. Test for Friction: Don't just ask about their biggest wins. Ask about a deal they lost late in the funnel. Why did it stall? What did they do to save it? Look for extreme accountability.
➡️2. Sales Environment: An Account Executive who crushed a 1.2 million dollar quota with an army of inbound leads will often drown in a Series A environment where they have to source their own pipeline. Match the candidate's historical motion to your current reality.
➡️3. "Live" Stress Test: Never make an offer without a roleplay that mimics your actual buyer objections. Watch how they handle unexpected pushback in real-time. Do they get defensive, or do they lean in with curiosity?
