Retired Army captain fighting for PTSD, veteran recovery

QUICK READ: "Retired Army Captain Karen-Nicole “Cole” Knapper spent more than a decade fighting for freedom, with her first combat tour coming just six weeks after 9/11. In total, Knapper served four combat tours overseas, including serving as a company commander while deployed in Afghanistan. During her service she earned the Bronze Star Medal in 2002 as corporal, and again in 2010 as a company commander. Knapper was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in both 2010 and 2012. Knapper said she continues to live with the experiences and pain from PTSD. One memory of a visit to eastern Afghanistan is particularly troubling for the retired officer..."

Veteran: 'I would do it again'

QUICK READ: "Veterans aren't foremost on people's minds during Independence Day celebrations, but to Bob Alexander, they should be.

The Albany man, 68, thinks about them all the time, partly because he knows what it's like to be overlooked. That tends to happen, he said, when you serve with the U.S. Army Signal Corps, a title that tends to prompt one reaction: "Who?"

“On this day of Independence, my thoughts are on my brothers and sisters that have worn the uniform of the United States and have taken the oath to defend the United States from all enemies, foreign and domestic, I thank you for your service," he said. "You are keeping our nation free from tyranny and to those countries you are helping to do the same.""

QUICK READ: "DES MOINES, Iowa-- A B-17 bomber from World War II made a stop in Des Moines Sunday. One of its passengers was Fred K***z, a 94-year-old veteran who flew B-17's during the war. The veteran got the chance to ride in it, and the plane is one of only 12 remaining airworthy B-17s.

"Well we took it down over Winterset, that's my home town and that was a treat," K***z said. K***z sat tail gunner and completed 50 missions aboard B-17s."

For the past 10 years, Building Homes for Heroes has given away free homes to wounded military veterans in need. On Tuesday, they added another veteran to that list.

Retired veteran, 71, graduates with Ph.D. in engineering from Texas Tech

QUICK READ: "“You’re never too old to learn,” said retired U.S. Air Force veteran Francisco Figueroa.

On Friday evening, the 71-year-old man graduated Texas Tech University in Lubbock with a doctoral degree in systems management engineering.

“It’s been 50 years since I graduated the first time from Texas Tech,” he said.

Figueroa is the first in his family to earn a college degree. He said that seeing his father return to school at earn a GED at the age of 69 inspired him to always continue to learn.

“Never give up on your dreams and always keep on trying to learn a little bit more today than you did yesterday,” Figueroa said."

Awareness walk hopes to highlight and recognize a veteran in need

QUICK READ: "Twenty-two veterans commit su***de each day in the U.S.

That's why on dozens of people walked to raise awareness about that statistic on May 13th.

The Veterans Awareness Walk wound its way through Milan starting midday.

The route was 2-point-2 miles long in honor of the 22 service men and women who take their own lives each day.

"We need to be aware that this can happen and recognize a veteran in need," says American Legion Officer and retired Marine Rick Schomer.

Schomer says he's had friends in the past that committed su***de as soon as they exited the military. He says he hopes to do more than raising awareness."

The ReSupply app's creator wants it used to help fulfill the wish lists of homeless shelters that specifically serve veterans.
