Where is AI being asked to guess in your business?

Start there, because that is where the drift begins.

AI rarely goes wrong at random.

It goes wrong at the exact points where the business never defined the rule clearly enough and the model has to infer what you meant.

Look for the places where AI is filling in structure that does not exist:

❓Which customer status is the correct one
❓Which data source to trust when two disagree
❓Which workflow step comes next
❓Which user is allowed to see what
❓Which approval is actually required
❓Which answer is safe to send a customer

Anywhere AI is inferring one of those, it is doing a job the system should have settled already.

The fix is a defined rule the AI can follow, instead of a gap it has to guess across.

Why Does Phishing Still Get Through When It Looks Like Work

A phishing scare should trigger an operational review, and the review has a shape:

✅ Accounts. Change the password through a trusted path, revoke active sessions, check recent logins and recovery settings.

✅ Email. Look for forwarding rules, filters, and delegated access nobody added on purpose.

✅ Connected apps. Check third-party OAuth grants on Workspace, Microsoft 365, your CRM, and your website platform.

✅ Admin access. Confirm who still has rights, and remove former employees and shared logins while you are in there.

None of that happens if the person who clicked stays quiet out of embarrassment, and the delay is what turns a near miss into an incident.

Treat a fast report as good judgment, every time.

A project inquiry comes through your website, and it looks like the fifty inquiries before it. You reply, because that is what a real lead gets.

Why Did Your Software Project Cost More Than Planned?

A single number on an invoice tells you how much you spent without telling you what you spent it on.

Ask for the same hours split into buckets:

✅ Planned build
✅ Discovery once the team was inside the system
✅ Scope you chose to add
✅ Technical debt recovery on old code
✅ QA findings
✅ Third-party and vendor friction
✅ Changes after stakeholder review

Now a bigger number means something.

You can see that most of the overage was cleanup on a system you inherited, or scope you approved yourself.

We quote a fixed fee so the price is set before the work starts.

When discovery finds something anyway, you hear about it while it is still a decision.

Ask your current partner to break last month's hours into those seven buckets...

There's a category of software problem that never makes it into your bug tracker: the temporary issue.

Something breaks once, a user moves on, and it never gets reported.

Left alone, these failures compound.

Tinker is our automated monitoring and repair agent.

Built internally, it runs daily, integrated directly with your codebase, watching logs, identifying anomalies, and fixing issues on its own.

When a fix requires developer review, Tinker opens a pull request.

When it can't resolve something directly, it builds a workaround. All fixes are reviewed by one of our developers before ever being pushed to production.

Tinker monitors:

🧪Bugs and code anomalies
🧪Server health and connectivity
🧪Security vulnerabilities
🧪Test coverage gaps

In this week’s Biz/Dev podcast, Page Conway, Founder and CEO of Ensembled, talks about getting beyond the numbers that look good and figuring out what actually measures success.

That means asking:

✅ Are we measuring real behavior or just activity?
✅ Which numbers actually help us make better decisions?
✅ What does success look like for our specific business?
✅ Are we tracking the metrics that matter to us, not just the ones everyone else uses?

Every business needs KPIs. But one of the most useful might be the one you define for yourself.

When did you last get an update on a build without asking for it first?

For a lot of clients the honest answer is the demo before launch, which is a long stretch to spend wondering whether the thing is on track.

What you should be getting from a development partner:

✅ A written update every week on a schedule
✅ A fixed fee, so scope conversations happen before invoices do
✅ Access to the working build itself
✅ A named person who answers when something looks wrong
✅ A list of what was tested before you were asked to review

We run weekly communication and fixed-fee delivery, and clients stay with us for years because they always know where a project stands.

Look at your last three status updates and check who started each one.
