Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust (SMOHIT) Our mission is to develop and promote health and safety resources for the sheet metal industry, thereby creating a safer, injury-free workforce.

Jointly sponsored by SMART, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation workers, and the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA), the Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust (SMOHIT) Inc. was founded in 1986 to address the impact of decades-long asbestos exposure on those working in the sheet metal industry. To date, tens of thousands of union sheet metal workers have been screened as part of its ongoing Job Hazards Screening program (formerly Asbestos Screening). SMOHIT has since expanded its mission to operate on four separate but related tracks: monitor and document the health of union sheet metal workers related to workplace exposures and hazards; provide safety information and training to promote best practices on and off the job; advocate for the physical, mental and emotional health and safety of SMART and SMACNA members with government and through likeminded allied organizations; and provide diet, exercise and other lifestyle information to address the health and wellness of union members and contractors. We offer the highest quality of safety training available, making the workforce more productive and economical. The well-being of sheet metal workers remains, as always, our primary focus.

Local 20's Workplace Exposure Research Program tour made its way to South Bend, part of an initiative Business Manager Todd Trent has brought to all seven of Local 20's Indiana locations, alongside his team of business reps, organizers, coordinator, and instructors who help make each stop happen.

Thank you to every member who came out to get screened, especially the retirees, who filled the hall with camaraderie all day.

If you've been in the trade a while and haven't been screened yet, don't wait, getting a baseline now gives you and your doctor something real to track down the road. You're eligible if you've been a SMART member for 10+ years, are a Building Trades member, and are in good standing. Check the website to see when the screening program is coming to your local.

Business agents, organizers, coordinators, instructors, and rank-and-file members packed the Union Hall for Workplace Exposure Research Program screenings, and plenty of laughs and stories made the rounds while members waited for their turn.

Powerful closing session on the final day of the SMII Conference this morning: Dr. LaTisha Bader, Chief Clinical Officer at Women's Recovery, led The Impact of Substances on Human Performance.

She had conference attendees interrupt her at different points throughout the talk to demonstrate how fast different substances, from coffee to ni****ne to alcohol and beyond, actually hit your system. She also broke down workplace warning signs and made clear that all substances affect everyone. A great reminder that what happens off the clock can affect the job in ways you don't expect.

Great way to wrap up Day Two of the SMII Conference was attending an afternoon breakout session led by Dr. Mike Barnes, NRT Senior Clinical Advisor and Director of the Michael Barnes Family Institute, titled Strategies for a Better You.

We're in Atlanta for the inaugural Sheet Metal Industry Institutes Conference, and it's been a great start. Executive Director Mike Harris welcomed the room by sharing what makes this gathering so special: SMOHIT, ITI, and NEMI, under one roof, all working toward the same goal for the first time.

Robyn Benincasa followed with a keynote on building a great team: think "we," not "me," and remember you're defined by your comeback, not your setback.

John Jackson, Craig Reehten, and Jeff Bradley then shared the stage, each with an update on their own institute. Mental health, safety, and taking care of each other are all ahead this week, plus the Safety Matters Awards tonight!

Members of Sheet Metal Workers Local 20 came out strong to their Indianapolis Union Hall for Workplace Exposure Research Program screenings.

Business agents, organizers, coordinators, instructors, and rank-and-file members all made time to get screened. It was great to feel the camaraderie in the room, especially among the retirees.

This program is about protecting our members in the long term through testing, guidance, and follow-up support by detecting diseases related to asbestos and silica exposure.

Even Fund leaders show up for screening, and that says something. Sheet Metal Industry Institutes Executive Director Michael T. Harris joined the Local 20 membership for Workplace Exposure Research Program screenings at the Local’s Fort Wayne Union Hall. It was great to see everyone who came, including business agents, organizers, coordinators, instructors and rank-and-file members.

The Workplace Exposure Research Program is designed to help detect certain workplace diseases related to asbestos and silica exposure through testing, guidance and follow-up support.
