Yesterday, SCR's Melissa Wooldridge attended TRBA Summit 26. This annual event hosted by the Tulsa Renewable Business Alliance (TRBA) provides great networking opportunities and education on the workforce and what industries are looking for in candidates.

Any Wordle fans out there?

This daily word puzzle game is fun and challenging – sometimes more than others – and there are several key similarities between Wordle and the hiring process, whether you’re the recruiter or the candidate.

In the game, you get six tries to guess a hidden five-letter word, using color-coded clues to determine which letters are correct and which are not. Green means you have the right letter in the right spot, yellow means you have the right letter in the wrong place, and gray means the letter doesn’t appear in the word.

Solving the puzzle involves placing the correct letters in the correct spaces. Sound familiar?

Your initial guess in Wordle and in filling a job position might be a shot in the dark. You don’t know yet what will be a good fit.

But with feedback telling you that you’re either right, almost right, or way off base, you can refine and narrow your search. Don’t mistakenly try the same letter, or candidate, again for the same puzzle when you’ve already learned it won’t work and has been eliminated.

At times, the best strategy if you get stuck is to take a break and walk away. Come back with fresh eyes, which often leads to better solutions.

Wordle requires both luck and skill, as does recruiting and searching for a job. But in all cases, skill determines long-term success as you consistently narrow down choices to figure out the answer in the most efficient and expedient way.

In the end, it is gratifying to find that perfect match, whether you are solving a word puzzle, recruiting for a position, or searching for a job.
