Three signals that tell me a candidate has real leverage in a salary negotiation:

1. The job has been posted for 2+ weeks. They haven't found someone. You're not the first choice — you might be the last reasonable option before they restart the search.

2. They hired a recruiter. That tells you they couldn't fill it through their own network. They've already spent money. They want this to close.

3. You have a certification or specific software the posting called out by name — Clio, NetDocuments, iManage, Relativity. That's not general experience. It's a specific need they're building around.

When these line up, counter. Not aggressively, but firmly. Most Tampa Bay firms expect it.

When these don't line up — entry-level, temp role, explicitly stated final offer — don't push. Read the room.

Message me if you're in an active offer situation and want a gut check on the number.

Most paralegals in Tampa Bay don't negotiate. They see a number, feel relieved, and say yes.

Then they spend the next two years watching a colleague — same experience, same firm — making $8,000 more because she asked.

Current market rates I'm seeing:
• Entry-level (0-3 yrs): $42,000–$52,000
• Mid-level (3-7 yrs): $52,000–$68,000
• Senior/specialized: $68,000–$85,000+

If you have eDiscovery experience, PACER proficiency, or a P*P certification, you're sitting in the upper half of every range. Act like it.

The window to negotiate is before you accept. Once you're in, it's a performance review cycle — and those move slowly.

Message me if you want to know what your specific experience is worth in the current Tampa Bay market.

If you're 1-2 years into your legal career, I want to push back on chasing remote.

I know that's not what anyone wants to hear.

But the paralegals and legal assistants who advance fastest in Tampa Bay are the ones who were in the office — watching how partners handle clients, picking up the culture, getting handed work that doesn't come to a screen.

Remote comes later. First build the reputation that earns it.

The hybrid roles right now ($48,000–$68,000) are where I'm seeing early-career professionals land their first real jump in responsibility. Remote positions exist, but the growth track is harder and the mentorship is thinner.

Two to three years in-office, then you negotiate from a position of strength.

Worth thinking about before the next application. Full breakdown at the link.

About 20% of Florida legal job postings are actually remote. Another 60% are hybrid. The rest are in-office.

The problem? A lot of firms call hybrid "remote" in job descriptions. I've seen candidates quit stable roles expecting something that wasn't there.

Here's how to tell the difference before you accept:
• Ask: "How many days in office is expected?" Get a number.
• Ask: "What does remote look like after the first 90 days?"
• Vague answers mean the answer is in-office more than they're letting on.

Practice areas where remote actually sticks: contract work, compliance, legal tech, legal research. Litigation, family law, real estate — expect 3+ days a week in the office regardless of what the posting says.

I'm seeing it every week. Message me if you're looking and want a straight answer on what's real in Tampa Bay right now.

25 years of connecting legal professionals with Tampa Bay law firms. That's a lot of handshakes, phone calls, and "I got the job" moments.

We updated the brand. New logo, new website, new systems behind the scenes. But the way we work hasn't changed. Danielle and I still handle placements personally. We still pick up the phone.

Here's what I'll say: hiring in legal is getting harder. Firms need people fast. Candidates want more than a job posting. They want someone who knows the market and knows the firms. That's been our thing for 25 years.

We've also started posting articles on als-staff.com about what we're seeing in Tampa Bay legal hiring. Salary info, career tips, market trends. Worth a look if you're in the industry.

Come check out the new site. And if you want to talk, reach out. You know how to find me.
