Almost every day I’m reading about possible job scams in my various LinkedIn and Facebook groups. 😡 It is so upsetting especially as these scams target more vulnerable groups like those , and .
There are several warning signs to look out for when applying for a job that could indicate a company or job posting may be a scam. Legit recruiters (like me, hi 👋) will definitely slide into your dm’s but how can you tell a real opportunity from a potential danger? Here are some common red flags-
🚩The job posting has a high salary for a position that requires little experience or qualifications.
🚩The job posting is vague or doesn't include much information about the job duties, company, or location.
🚩The company's website looks unprofessional or incomplete, and it's difficult to find information about the company or its products/services.
🚩The company asks for personal information, such as your social security number, credit score, or bank account information, *before* you've even been hired or in order to interview. Nope.
🚩The company asks you to pay for training or materials upfront or in order to interview.
🚩The job posting includes grammatical errors, typos, or inconsistencies.
🚩The interview process seems unprofessional or disorganized, such as conducting interviews over instant messaging apps or email instead of a professional platform. A chat-only interview is not normal!
🚩The company pressures you to accept the job offer quickly, without giving you enough time to ask questions or research the company. Or, they make you an offer without any interview process.
🚩The job posting or company name closely resembles a well-known brand or company, but with slight variations or misspellings.
If you come across any of these warning signs, it's important to proceed with caution and do more research before accepting a job offer or giving out personal information. I always say, if it smells fishy … 🐟 it probably is, so go with your gut!
