What exactly is your definition of a warm call versus a cold call?

While thorough research is certainly valuable and helps make the conversation more relevant, it does not automatically turn a call into a warm one.

A true warm call occurs when there is an existing relationship—such as a referral, a prior conversation, or a previous meeting.

In recruiting, even if I invest 10 minutes researching a prospective client before reaching out, the call remains a cold call from their perspective because they have no prior relationship with me.

No matter how well-prepared I am, if they don’t know me, it’s still prospecting aka cold call.

It’s fair to say that I’m a cold caller at heart. In sales, if you stop consistently filling your pipeline through proactive outreach, it’s very difficult to truly excel long-term.

That’s Sales 101.

Just had a thoughtful conversation yesterday with a highly experienced candidate—10 years of outstanding tenure and loyalty with their current employer.

Their expertise and dedication are truly impressive.
Yet, despite all that commitment, their compensation is significantly below market value.

It’s a reminder that while loyalty is a wonderful trait, it doesn’t always get rewarded financially the way it should.

In many organizations, annual raises hover around 3-5%, often barely keeping pace with inflation.

Meanwhile, those who make strategic moves externally frequently secure 10-20%+ increases (or more, depending on the role and market).

If your salary growth has stalled despite strong performance and long tenure, it might be time to confidentially explore the market.

You don’t have to leave—but knowing your true worth empowers better conversations (internally or externally).
