Bridging the gap for inclusive pathways to successful STEM careers

Sometimes the next chapter looks successful from the outside and still feels uncertain on the inside.

After leaving the military, I had a career.

A home.

A growing family.

Graduate school.

Plenty keeping me busy.

What I was still searching for was purpose.

CareerBridge eventually became part of the answer.

“We can't find local talent.”

I've heard versions of that statement from employers.

But here's what makes me question it.

In my county alone, 11 higher-education institutions produced more than 11,000 graduates in 2025.

I was one of those local graduates not long ago.

The talent exists.

Students exist.

Veterans exist.

Career changers exist.

Technical professionals exist.

Maybe the problem isn't always a lack of talent.

Maybe we haven't built strong enough bridges between education, employers, and opportunity.

That's one of the problems CareerBridge was created to help solve.

Employers: where do you think the biggest disconnect between local talent and local businesses happens?

Employers:

“We can't find talent.”

Graduates:

“We can't find opportunities.”

Veterans:

“Employers don't understand our experience.”

Career changers:

“Nobody considers us because we don't have the title.”

All four things can exist at the same time.

That's why workforce development can't only be about creating more talent.

Sometimes we need stronger bridges to existing talent.

A résumé can tell you where someone worked.

It can tell you their title.

It can tell you which tools they've used.

But some of the qualities employers value most are much harder to fit into a bullet point.

How someone responds when the plan falls apart.

Whether they take ownership when nobody is watching.

How they communicate under pressure.

Whether the team trusts them when things get difficult.

Military service taught me those things long before I started Career Bridge.

And today, I see the same challenge from the employer side.

Veterans, career changers, emerging professionals, and people with nontraditional backgrounds often have valuable experience that simply isn't packaged in familiar corporate language.

That's why I believe good hiring requires more curiosity.

Don't only ask:

“Does their background look familiar?”

Ask:

“What has this person already proven they can handle?”

Hiring leaders: what's one quality your strongest employees have that you probably couldn't have identified from their résumé alone?

Building a stronger workforce isn't something employers can do alone.

It takes collaboration between schools, businesses, community organizations, and industry leaders.

When those groups work together, students gain opportunities.

Businesses gain skilled professionals.

Communities gain long-term growth.

That's why we believe recruitment is only one piece of a much bigger picture.

Think again. The talent is here, ready, and driven—from hard-working students and graduates to dedicated service members transitioning to civilian roles. Saying otherwise overlooks an entire community of capable professionals.

By building strong partnerships with colleges, universities, military installations, and the Department of Labor, it is entirely possible to connect with thousands of qualified individuals. Over 1,200 connections were made in just a single year by simply looking in the right places.

The talent isn't missing; you just have to know where to find it. 💼✨

One thing I appreciate about working with employers is seeing the impact they have beyond their own organizations.

When businesses invest in people...

They strengthen teams.

They create careers.

They support families.

They help communities grow.

That's why workforce development has never been just about recruitment for us.

It's about creating opportunities that last.

Some of the most valuable professional skills are also the hardest to measure on paper.

Adaptability.

Accountability.

Staying calm when things change.

Communicating when the pressure is high.

Taking ownership when there isn’t a perfect playbook.

Military experience taught me how important those qualities are.

And now, working in recruitment and workforce development, I see the same thing from the other side.

A candidate may not use the exact language your job description uses.

Their previous title may not perfectly match your open role.

The strongest university partnerships don’t start when students graduate.

They start earlier.

Guest lectures.

Internships.

Mentorship.

Real-world projects.

Career exposure.

When students understand what industry actually needs—and employers understand what students are learning—the gap gets smaller.

That’s not just recruiting.

That’s workforce development.

One thing I've been hearing lately is...

"People just don't want to work anymore."

Honestly...

I don't believe that's the real problem.

I think people want to do work that matters.

They want to know why they're doing it.

They want to feel respected.

They want leaders who communicate.

The people I meet every week aren't looking for shortcuts.

They're looking for opportunity.

That's a very different conversation.
