🎉 Happy 250th Birthday, America! Let’s Celebrate Careers Together! 🎉
Every 4th of July, I think about a barbecue in South Carolina over 15 years ago.
I was speaking with someone who was familiar with an employability program I had been growing across the county, and he wanted to hear more about the hundreds of young adults building skills, completing internships, and, for some, landing their first paying roles. Nearby, his friend overheard our conversation, walked over, and asked what I did. We chatted for a bit, and then I turned it around and asked him, “What do you do?”
He smiled...big!
“I was an attorney in Guatemala and hated it. So, I came to the United States to do whatever I wanted to do, and I love my job now.”
He went on to briefly share his story. After coming to the U.S., he tried a few different roles before pivoting completely into logistics. He loved spending his days coordinating with people worldwide to move cargo for his clients. Then he said something I have never forgotten:
“Where I came from, once you finish school, you stay in that role for life. You have no choice. Now I am a proud U.S. citizen and often notice, when speaking with other Americans, that they don’t realize how rare what they have really is.”
He was right. Many Americans are unaware of how career opportunities differ in other countries, and I completely agreed with him then, and still do today.
🎉 The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks 867 distinct occupations, one of the most comprehensive career classification systems in the world. And behind every one of those job titles is an American who had the career freedom to choose it. Even when we accept a role out of pure need, we still choose it, temporarily or for longer.
🎉 In America, you can start in one role, pivot when life demands it, grow when you choose to or when opportunity calls, reinvent when your soul needs it, and get back up when layoffs knock us down. That is career management at its finest. Even when we feel stuck, we can take action and gain momentum. Not always easily, and not always perfectly.
🎉 Here is what I know and continue celebrating after years of walking alongside thousands of professionals: We each get One Life, One Career™. Every role, skill, challenge, and contribution counts. We all matter; every job matters; every employer matters; and new opportunities emerge even when roles vanish.
🎉 So today, on America’s 250th birthday, I am grateful for the country I live in. Grateful for the career I have built and the people in my life. I am especially grateful for every conversation, like that one at a barbecue in SC, that reminds me why career freedom is worth celebrating every single day.
